Magnetic Imprint Podcast Episode 5: Nettwerk Records and Maxi Records

Episode 5 of the Magnetic Imprint Podcast digs into the collection of Nettwerk Records and celebrates their release of the Maxi Reborn series. Hosted by Master Wayne.

What’s up Magnetic Magazine readers! I am excited to present a new episode of the Magnetic Imprint Podcast. For episode 5 we are doing double duty with an exploration of Nettwerk Records and a focus on their Maxi Reborn series.

Nettwerk Records was born in 1984 in Vancouver when the founders; Terry McBride, Mark Jowett, Ric Arboit, and Dan Fraser, wanted an outlet for the band, Moev, to release music. Nettwerk quickly grew after getting attention from Capitol Records, scoring them a distribution deal with the record giant. When Terry McBride heard a 19 year old singer at a show in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he knew she would be a star and approached her with a deal. That singer was the Grammy winning Sarah McLachlan.

Not only was McLachlan an incredibly gifted singer and songwriter, she came up with an idea for a touring concert that was different from any other she had experienced in her career. So with help from Nettwerk’s McBride and Fraser, they created Lilith Fair.

Today, Nettwerk Records has grown into the umbrella company, Nettwerk Music Group, which includes Nettwerk Management and Nettwerk One Publishing. Nettwerk Music Group has been involved in establishing careers for many household names like: Dido, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Coldplay, BT, Sinead O’Connor, Guster, Fun., Dispatch, Ladytron, Delerium, and Chromeo, through one or more of its recording, management, or publishing arms. So, it is no surprise that they are always on the lookout for more music to release to the world. Which leads us to their acquisition of Maxi Records in 2015.

In New York in 1990, Claudia Cuseta created Maxi Records. The label helped expand the house music scene throughout the 90s working with artists like Roger Sanchez, Danny Tenaglia, Naked Music NYC, Judy Albanese, Sagat, Cevin Fisher, and Armand Van Helden. In 1994 Sagat’s “Funk Dat” hit the top 10 on Billboard’s dance chart and sold over half a million copies.

Fast forward to 2015, Nettwerk Music Group acquired the catalogue of Maxi Records, heralding the release of the Maxi Reborn series. Maxi Reborn is a series that celebrates the soulful sounds of classic house tracks with remasters and remixes that fortify the music for the today’s dancefloor. Three of the five slated releases are now unveiled and you will be hearing them in today’s Magnetic Imprint Podcast. They are:
