If you are an old school Hip Hop fan then you no doubt have a fond memory and affinity for the trio out of Brooklyn called The Digable Planets. They, along with De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Common and countless others changed the sound of the genre with their jazzy samples and intricate rhymes.
The Planets are back for a tour or is it just a cash grab, who cares as long as the show is great. Back in 05, there was the anticipation of a new album with their first reunion tour but that unfortunately that never materialized, just a greatest hits record. So the tour is all we got, and now we are getting another one, no hint of a new album, though. Maybe it's best just to let the old work be their legacy, but a part of me would love to hear a new record from an older and wiser Planets.
Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space) was one of those records that changed your life, it was so incredibly fresh and still blows me away. If you haven't had a chance to spend time with their albums, give them a listen and prepare for immediate head bobbing inspiration.
You best catch them on this tour, because it might be their last... you just never know with these guys. Tour dates below.
Verse 1: Butterfly] "Where I'm From"
Boogie jive and rap is life where I'm from
Where I'm from, Ahmed play with Izzy where I'm from
Where I'm from, it be like run your coat black
Jupiter, keeps her fat beats by the pack
Where I'm from, nappy hair is life
We be reading Marx where I'm from
The kids be rocking Clarks where I'm from
You turn around your cap, you talk over a beat
And dig some sounds booming out a jeep
Where I'm from, cocoons hide the youth, swoon units hundred proof
Following their recent reunion at major music festivals Sasquatch!, Essence and, most recently, Pitchfork, Digable Planets -- the alternative hip-hop trio comprised of Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving, and Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler -- are reunited and currently on their highly anticipated first tour since 2005. Full list of tour dates below.
The group’s debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) was released in 1993 under Pendulum Records. The album's lead single, "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" became a crossover Top 20 Billboard hit, earning gold certification by the RIAA and winning the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Digable’s fusion of jazz with hip hop broadened hip hop’s reach and expanded it’s connection to music history, African American culture and the sounds of the streets. The trio’s second album in late 1994, Blowout Comb, organically integrated soul, jazz and live instrumentation with political consciousness, mixed in with happy observations of everyday life. Both albums are proven hip-hop classics thriving on listeners’ ability to relate, think, feel and be inspired.
After 1994's Blowout Comb, the group decided to pursue solo careers -- Butler created and is currently frontman for Seattle based hip-hop group Shabazz Palaces with Tendai Maraire and Irving founded the Philly based collective Cee Knowledge & the Cosmic Funk Orchestra. Vieira is currently leading lady for her group BROOKZILL! along side Prince Paul, Don Newkirk, and Rodrigo Brandão. The three came together in 2005, releasing their compilation LP, Beyond the Spectrum: the Creamy Spy Chronicles; and again in 2011 for an appearance (minus Ladybug Mecca) at the NXNE festival in Toronto.
Digable’s music is one of the guaranteed sounds in hip-hop to “put on and enjoy and vibe out to, with a rich undercurrent of history and thought.” A proper reunion for Digable Planets has been a long time coming and fans are ready.
