David & Goliath this week. Some big names dropped some dope tunes – Quix put a major twist on Skrillex's remix of Nero (how's that for names?). And if that wasn't enough, Dillon Francis actually went full on trap. Not moombah. Trap.
But don't underestimate the power of the underdogs. Buygore's Holly threw down an avant garde air raid with his new Forward EP, and Yellow Claw got all roughed up by some little-known talent.
So who has the better tunes this week? The Davids, or the Goliaths?
*Full Playlist at bottom
Holly - 'You Make Me Alive'
How far he's come in 9 months. Not that his previous EP Manere Aurum should be looked down upon. It's just such a different sound, and the two EPs are only 9 months apart. And then there's his ambient beat tapes.
Max Styler & Felmax - 'Skyline'
Major tune. It's hilarious in hindsight how innocuous the vocal sample sounded at first. Know this one now, or feel ridiculous later.
Rickyxsan - 'Gotta Lean Back'
Name That Trapped Rap Classic (Episode 875,321). The style works no doubt – a little nostalgia with a lotta party. Rickyxsan manages to do the style better than probably the other 875,000 too. *Lil' Jon 'Snap Yo Fingers' is the answer btw
Yellow Claw - 'The Roller (The Galaxy Remix)'
On the Barong Family World Tour along with Wiwek, San Holo, Moksi, Mike Cervello, Fountain of Youth, FS Green, Chace, Dirtcaps, LNY TNZ, Cesqeaux, Mighty Fools and Yellow Claw for good reason. The Dutch duo quite spritely on the remix.
Phantoms - 'Call My Name (Dillon Francis Remix)'
I'd pretty much reached to the point of just ignoring Dillon Francis. An initial fan, all the antics, celebing and collab after collab just made me tune out. Well consider me tuned back in. Seriously, this is the Dill? If you needed a reminder of how good he is, this is it.
Jinco - 'Tokyo'
Take it to Broadway, Jinco. It doesn't get much more epic than this.
Nero - 'Promises (Skrillex & Nero Remix) [Quix Flip]'
That first moment when you realize this isn't the same Skrillex remix. That second moment when your head explodes. To clarify, watch out for drop #2.
YULTRON - 'Headbang N Chill Part 2'
One of those rare situations where the sequel is superior to the original. Not exactly the same kind of nostalgia I get from Rickyxsan's 'Gotta Lean Back' but buzzing nonetheless.
Yellow Claw (feat. Pusha T & Barrington Levy) - 'Nightmare (Ape Drums Remix)'
The original was more commercial than 3am TV, but Ape Drums does away with all that to great effect. Besides, I had to put some moombahton in this chart. One of 17 remixes on the Blood For Mercy remix album.
Snavs & Fabian Mazur - 'Murda'
You can catch that trippy Fabian trap in here. Otherwise, just another genius blend of tuff euphoria from Snavs.
