As much as modern-day trance purists may scoff at the name Armin van Buuren, he's still managed to cater to the genre's more discerning fan base through his Gaia side project. He's teamed up with longtime collaborator and Rank 1 member Benno de Goeij to make music and perform under the moniker since 2014, and now he's revealed that the duo is working on an album.
In a live Facebook Q&A session from backstage at Creamfields this past weekend, van Buuren answered questions ranging from his phone bill to the jacket he was wearing in the video live stream. In response to one viewer's question, he wrote, "Yes Im working on a GAIA album. (sic)"
Whereas recent Armin van Buuren releases have consisted of what more tenured trance fans might write off as "trouse," Gaia songs like "INYATHI" and "In Principio" feature the higher BPM and rolling bass kicks characteristic of the genre's heyday. As what artists like Giuseppe Ottaviani and Solarstone have dubbed the "pure trance movement" has sparked a resurgence of more classic styles, a studio-length album debut from Gaia couldn't have arrived at a better time.
Armin van Buuren has yet to reveal a title, release date or tracklist for his and Benno de Goeij's debut album as Gaia.
