There's a handful of signs that the EDM era of dance music is drawing to a close, and depending on who you talk to, Avicii's retirement is one of them. The Swedish DJ/producer came to symbolize the main stage grandeur (and arguable excess) of our musical era, and following a performance at Ushuaïa Ibiza on Sunday, August 28th, he officially retires from touring.
Avicii tendered his resignation by writing an open letter in March announcing that his current string of gigs would be his last. It's all but common knowledge that the "Wake Me Up" producer has struggled with substance abuse; his health led him to cancel significant touring stints in both 2014 and 2015.
Avicii has reassured fans that he will continue to make music even in the absence of live performances - and has admitted that he might even return to them one day. “I can’t say I’m never going to have a show again,” he wrote earlier in the year.
