Summer Set Music and Camping Festival just ended on Sunday. We are still in recovery mode and suffering from slight post-rave depression after heading back to the real world. Summer Set was a three-day music festival in Somerset, Wisonsin featuring artists such as NGHTMARE, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Skrillex, and tons of others - many of whom we already told you about in a previous article.
While Summer Set is by no means the last festival of the season, it is the festival some of us chose to celebrate the end of our summer - and it definitely accomplished that task. Every artist gave it their all; however, there were some artists that really hit the nail on the head and were responsible for the best sets. Magnetic Magazine reviewed and talked to festivalgoers at Summer Set to pick some of the top sets of the weekend.
Porn and Chicken
On Friday, Porn and Chicken brought down the big top with chaos and debauchery. This fan favorite threw champagne in your face and looped raunchy images through their set with, of course, a chicken as hype man for the duration. The bass music trio is known for their out-of-control parties at Evil Olive in Chicago, and they were the fan favorite because they went harder than most DJs on that rainy Friday. Plan to see them only get bigger and crazier in the future.
It's never easy to play a set at the same time as a household name like Steve Aoki, whom even your grandmother knows at this point. However, Classixx provided a haven for festival goers less keen on electro house or big room bangers. The two childhood friends kept us warm and dancing in the cold rain with everything from indie electronica to deep house. Look out for Classixx touring around the country showing off songs from their new album, Faraway Reach.
It is interesting how many festivalgoers of Summer Set Music Festival - a festival rooted in feelgood vibes - choose Hippie Sabotage as their favorite on Sunday. the duo recently attacked security guards at What The Festival after getting into a fight with the production team. Hippie Sabotage has never claimed to be the peace-loving types that we associate with the word "hippie," and their performance at Summer Set last weekend demonstrated why. They went hard and did not care.
G Jones played Saturday night right before Illenium in the Big Top. Grime and trap went over well with the Summer Set crowd, who were anticipating a hard and intense set from Bassnectar later that night. With the recent announcement that G Jones and Bassnecter are collaborating, it could not have been more perfect for either of the two artists' fans. G Jones brought down the Big Top and got everyone grimy - he was easily the most talked-about artist the next morning!
Mr. Carmack was featured in our aforementioned "Must Sees" article, and he fulfilled our every hope. He's known for his production and DJing expertise; however, he has grown immensely in the past year alone. His transition between tracks was flawless and smooth, which was one of his difficulties in the past. Everyone at his set was dancing - and dancing hard, at that. Mr. Carmack is using his time to tour around the country and produce new tracks all the time.
It's a big task to end a festival on the Main Stage. While the crowd still had Skrillex and Logic to look forward to, Marshmello brought the energy to finish up the last hours of the festival. The relatively anonymous bass music DJ/producer has gained a lot of traction in the last year mainly due to his hard-hitting trap anthems and ambiguous identity. Marshmello knows how to connect with his fans and keep them going all night long. After his set, he took the time to go out onto the festival grounds and visit with fans, making him one of the favorite and most loved acts of Sunday night.
There were so many great artists at Summer Set Music Festival - no one was a disappointment or fell flat. Let us know which sets were your favorite at Summer Set Music Festival and why in the comments.
