On Tuesday, a California State Court jury returned with a 10-2 verdict in favor of the Hard Rock Cafe at the end of a two-week case involving EDM superstar Steve Aoki. The case had only recently gone to trial, but was the result of a 2012 incident in which Aoki stage dove onto an inflatable raft, breaking the neck of attendee Brittany Hickman, who was standing underneath it.
According to Courtroom View Network (CVN), Hard Rock's legal team argued that the venue's staff had no way of knowing that Aoki would attempt the stunt - and pointed out that the entertainer had reached an outside settlement with Hickman.
Hickman's attorney, John Gomez, told CVN that he was considering an appeal. “I suspect that Hard Rock recognizes they were very fortunate to receive the defense verdict they did,” he said. “I hope it will be a wakeup call for them as well. And so we feel good about the litigation and our efforts.”
Steve Aoki is also embroiled in another lawsuit regarding a recent performance stunt - in this case, his signature cake throwing.
