10 Of The Most Successful Music Labels Ever

What does it take to be a successful label? Here are ten examples.

The music industry has evolved dramatically over the past few years mostly due to online downloads and other music streaming services becoming more popular and convenient for listeners. However there are still numerous record labels out there keen to seek out the best and most unique sounds they can discover to bring to the forefront of the music market.

Parlophone logo


Established in 1896 Parlaphone is one of the oldest record labels around and is still very much active to this very day. They were home to some of the biggest pop bands in history including Blur, the Pet Shop Boys, Coldplay and of course the Beatles. Even Queen, Bowie and Kylie have all had a stint with the label during their careers.

The legendary Manchester-based independent label was setup back in 1978 by Tony Wilson who managed to sign a whole host of artists who were having a major impact in the music scene at the time. Notable bands who signed up included Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays.

Def Jam was a revolutionary new label for the hip hop genre which managed to attract the likes of Public Enemy, Jay Z, the Beastie Boys and Kanye West. It was setup in 1984 by music producer Rick Rubin and is still attracting big names in the industry including Iggy Azalea, Alesso and Justin Bieber.


Even though it was only around for 14 years British label Hut Records still attracted a number of noteworthy bands and artists. Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Gomez, Embrace and The Verve all had a stint at Hut before it finally shut its doors back in 2004.

Another hugely successful label which has been running for well over 100 years is Columbia. Every decade that’s past has bought plenty of success for the company who boast an impressive back catalogue of clients that includes Bob Dylan, The Clash, Kasabian, ELO, Kings of Leon and N.E.R.D. to name but a few.

The sound of ska was fast becoming a new musical phenomenon in the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s. Thankfully there was a label dealing with that very concept over at Two Tone. Bands such as Madness, The Beat and The Specials were all signed on to the specialised label.



XL Records is an independent dance label which since 1989 has helped a number of groups get their sound into the mainstream. The label has worked alongside the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Radiohead, The White Stripes, The Prodigy and Basement Jaxx over the years.



Independent label Creation can boast working with plenty of British talent over the years. It was of course home to a number of alternative bands including Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals, The Jesus and Mary Chain and even Oasis. Unfortunately the label ceased promotions in 1999 after selling off most of the label to Sony several years before.



This small London-based label is responsible for releasing a number of hit records and toe-tapping tunes from some of the best British bands around including Bloc Party, Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires and Hot Chip.



Another well-established record label that is still in action is Island Records. This 57-year old label has worked with Pulp, U2, Nine Inch Nails as well as reggae legend Bob Marley. Nowadays it still attracts big names in the industry that includes Avicii, PJ Harvey, Fall Out Boy, Keane, Snow Patrol and Elton John.
