Eats Everything has been on his A-game for the last five years. His sets have been magnetic, his music has been addicting. The Brighton-based producer is a master artist, and with his new EP and record label in hand, Eats is ready for the next level.
We had a chance to chat with him about his latest project, record label, his 2016, and more!
Hey Eats, thanks for taking the time to read this! You've been involved with music in some capacity for years now. How do you continue to keep yourself motivated and positive through thick and thin?
I’ve always loved Djing and music, so it’s not hard at all to be motivated – I always look forward to playing, even if the traveling and being away from my family is hard occasionally. It was more difficult back when I was trying to work a day job and hadn’t really had my “break” yet, but I always knew that music was the only career option for me. I just had to keep at it.
You've released dance music of various different subgenres over the years, but for those that haven't heard your latest Girl Powder EP, what would you sum it up as? What was the motivation for the title, and why did you center it around girls/women?
I would sum this up as my attempt to create the kinds of sounds I’d want to hear at a rave. Because it was female vocals on the track I thought I’d try and think of the female electronic related names, and then because it was two girls as the tracks, I thought I’d go one further and play on the idea of girl power for the title, with powder being linked to rave culture obviously…
You've released a lot of music this year, and collaborated with some greats, like Green Velvet. Do you have personal standout tracks from this year or events you performed at? How will you top 2016 musically as we head into 2017?
Yeah, my remix of Flash and The Duster were musical highlights for me – I’ve always looked up to Green Velvet and felt so honoured to be able to work with him. Dropping the Flash remix at the sold out Elrow residency back in July was a special moment and I’ve really enjoyed all my gigs with the Elrow family. Bestival was also one of my favourite gigs of all time, and it goes without saying that the Space closing was a highlight – I’ll never forget the nights I had at that place and it was a privilege to be able to play at its final goodbye.
We'd love to learn more about Edible, the sort of fluid label/party/podcast. Since launching it in 2015, what have been the greatest challenge in owning your own company? On the flip side, what have been your greatest achievements with starting your own label?
Being able to give upcoming producers a platform to put their music out has to be the highlight. Also, creating a family/crew of people who release on Edible/play at Edible parties and so become great friends.
Back in 2013, I had the chance to interview you at EARMILK backstage at HARD Summer Music Festival. There, you gave some advice about some of the things you did to make it, like how to contact DJs and how to get signed to the label of your dreams. With how more and more active people have gotten on the internet even since 2013, do you have new advice on how someone might get their kickstart in the music world?
Not really, I still think going to the parties and speaking to the DJs is the best way. On top of that, monitors are the most important thing in your studio; in 2011 I got new monitors and Entrance Song was made. One of the main things I have always said and still believe is also, once you are ready to send your first record to someone, don't send it but wait at least 6 months. If it still sounds great then, send it.
