Oakland mayor announces grant for artists' spaces

$1.7 million dollars will go to music venues and living space

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has announced a grant of $1.7 million dollars that will go towards music/art venues and living spaces for the art community. This was announced after the death of 36 attendees of a party at The Ghost Ship Warehouse.

The grant comes from a donation via the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Community Arts Stabilization Trust. They hope that this grant will "help artists keep their existing venues, or move into permanent, affordable space." They further hope that this "be used to purchase real estate and lease it at below market rates to Oakland artists."
