UK label Planet Mu welcomes back Jlin for her second album titled Black Origami following on from the success of Jlin’s debut album, Dark Energy, in 2015. Her upcoming record will feature collaborative work with William Basinski, Holly Herndon, Halcyon Veil producer Fawkes, and Cape Town rapper Dope Saint Jude. Inspired by her recent collaborations with choreographer Avril Stormy, Jlin says “movement played a great role in Black Origami”,
Black Origami is out 19 of May on 2 LP, CD or digital download. Based off the two tracks we've previewed thus far, ‘Nyakinyua’ and ‘Nandi’, the record feels like a reflection of our slightly chaotic world. The use of layering in some of the tracks gives a hectic dynamic to the music, while the influences Africa's tribes allows the listener to remember where we ultimately started from and the uniting force of music at any age, geography, or history.
In the press release, Jlin noted:
“The simple definition of origami is the art of folding and constructing paper into a beautiful, yet complex design. Composing music for me is like origami, only I’m replacing paper with sound. I chose to title the album “Black Origami” because like “Dark Energy” I still create from the beauty of darkness and blackness.”
