In the age of social media and with the rise of livestreaming, fans and audiences are closer than ever to their favorite artists and DJs. Trutopia are a DJ duo that host a monthly event called The Night Mayors, showcasing their musical talents, as well as the talents of their friends in the London scene, the duo are carving their name in the dance circles both domestically and abroad.
We sat down with the duo ahead of their May 5 event, to learn more about how they started in music, their challenges, and more.
How did you start your career in the electronic music business?
Growing up it was kind of hard to escape music, our two older siblings were both in bands constantly bringing new music in to the house. It wasn’t until we moved to London a few years back that we decided it was our turn. We grabbed the closest instrument, which was the MicroKorg and cracked on until we got something half decent. That led to getting a little home studio setup, learning to produce & perfecting our sound. Once we had that naturally came the Djing & the parties we throw now known as “The Night Mayors”
What is the best part of the business?
We are very lucky that we have no one telling us what to do, so we can make what ever we like, throw parties when ever we want & enjoy the ride.
What are the biggest challenges?
There are things that have been key to our uniqueness in our music & with our party ‘The Night Mayors”. We know we face challenges as we grow as a brand. We really want to maintain the quality, intimacy & unique feel that we have at the moment.
What career advice would you recommend to someone just starting off?
Do what feels right. Try not to let anybody overpower your creativity.
As the EDM industry continues to grow, what do you think the secrets to longevity in this business will be?
Keep an ear to the streets & keep good relationships.
What does electronic music mean to you?
New music is so accessible now & we are constantly on the hunt for new tunes to play out. Fitting thousands of tracks on to USB's & just rocking up to play electronically is mind-blowing.
What cities/regions do you think electronic dance music is best thriving?
With so many wicked radio stations such as NTS, Radar, Represent, Rinse & more keeping the city buzzing, mad DIY parties on top floors of hotels to sweaty basement parties (where we throw ours) there's no city quite like London.
Check out their next livestream show on May 5, which will showcase the power of up-and-coming DJ, Tazer. The performance will take place on the Trutopia Facebook here from 8-11pm GMT.
