If you're interested in the world of turntablism, then you've undoubtedly heard DJ Shiftee's name as he's a 2x DMC World DJ Champion. Since then, however, he's been the mastermind behind HOT MOM USA, a home for left-of-center electronic and hip hop hybrid tracks. The label has been home to some truly incredible artists, including TT the Artist and D-Dots, and the result has been a creative hub for those truly underrated acts in the dance scene.
Today they're gearing up for Boom Bap & Beyond, an EP that celebrates 5 years of the label, and we've got something that's exciting for our listeners today from the upcoming release. Titled "Van Full of Drugs," Shiftee holds nothing back and keeps things interesting without overbearing the artist. Manus and his rap style mesh perfectly with the production as well, and he's definitely going to be on our radar after this track.
On the release, he notes:
"I linked w/ the LA-based Manus via my homies Lazerdisk. They came through my crib during a NY trip and we wrote a bunch of songs together in my little home studio. We were sippin on some fancy scotch when Manus was telling stories about how he used to roll into NYC in a, well, van full of drugs. I threw on the beat, and we almost immediately knocked out the song. The first vocals you hear are are the first things he even said to the beat. One of those magical collaborative moments in the studio.” -Shiftee
