Melody isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind when discussing current techno. That's not to say it's not out there, because it definitely is, but generally we think strange, reverbed out percussion and random single words being repeated. Paris-based label Blackstrobe Records looks to change things up, with the latest release from Fabrizio Rat and his 'The Pianist' LP.
“Take a piano, the classic and romantic instrument par excellence, and project it into the hypnotic and powerful soundscape of techno music.” This is quote is from the label, and that's about as accurate as it gets for this release. Each track has a touch of neo-romantic, but with a smooth techno beat under it, and it really is something unique. Varrying rhythms and notes add a sense of freshness over the robotic noise that has been getting around recently.
'Rubinstein', a more ambient number, displays the above idea in a way that allows you to clearly hear both the classical and the techno. An arping chord progression floats eerily over a bubbling acid line, with a touch of strange noises that add bit of slight discomfort. This would be a great opening track, or maybe closing track, although I think that would go over better at the start of a set.
'The Pianist' by Fabrizio Rat is available now on Blackstrobe Records.
