Last night we brought you the news of Karoondinha Festival and its cancelation due to poor ticket sales and rising costs. Today we have yet another festival cancelation, but for entirely other reasons. The xx’s new three-day event titled Day + Night in Iceland was slated to feature the likes of Sampha, Jagwar Ma, Floating Points, Warpaint, Robyn, Earl Sweatshirt and Kamasi Washington from July 14-16. According to organizers, the festival was canceled after the site it was being held on, Skogafoss, was added to the Environmental Agency of Iceland’s list of endangered areas.
According to a report on places in Iceland at risk of environmental degradation, called the “Red List,” the area features one of the most famous waterfalls in the country and the infrastructure is falling to match the demand of tourists. Significant work needs to be done to preserve the integrity and beauty of the waterfall.
After the review, there was not enough time for The xx and the festival organizers to make the necessary arrangements to make the festival a no environmental impact event or to find a new location. With only three weeks until kickoff, the event has been canceled.
“Whilst everyone involved in this event has been excited about working towards something memorable and spectacular, it is however fundamental that we put any environmental responsibilities first especially when we're dealing with such a special location,” the promoter said in a statement. “Ultimately the challenges on this site were insurmountable and it was not possible to secure another suitable venue in time. We know that people will be hugely disappointed as we are, but we hope everyone understands the situation.”
Refunds are reportedly being processed.
