Welcome to the inaugural monthly techno chart. A place where only the cream of the crop will be showcased every month. A chart that will be completely devoid of filler. Tracks that will be remembered as the biggest of the year and others that will just be remembered as the one that completely smashed it last night.
These are the very best techno tracks of August 2017!
1. "TRIGONOMETRY" - SASHA [WATERGATE]
Sasha's well-overdue debut on Watergate is finally here and it features two originals from the man himself including this dashing new composition called "Trigonometry." A progressive banger that unravels with a sophisticated, ultra-euphoric breakdown prompting you to close your eyes and sway your hands high up in the air.
2. "STARDUST" - VICTOR RUIZ [SUARA]
With magnificent tunes like this one, Brazilian techno maestro, Victor Ruiz is on pace to be the genre's next superstar.
3. "CANCELLED SHOW (ROBERT BABICZ REMIX)" - SAYTEK [DECAY RECORDS]
Decay Records' newest VA package is a double-sided release that features a couple of originals by two different artists along with a few remixes to complement the release. Including this wicked 303 chugger courtesy of the techno wizard from Cologne known as Robert Babicz.
4. "ADRIFT (AVALON EMERSON'S FURIOUSLY AWAKE VERSION)" - OCTO OCTA [HONEY SOUNDSYSTEM]
Out now exclusively on 12" vinyl through San Francisco's own Honey Soundsystem imprint.
5. "LIKE THIS" - SLAM [SOMA RECORDS]
6. "SUKI" - DENSE & PIKA [DRUMCODE]
Techno titans, Dense & Pika return to Drumcode with a three-track outing that leads off with the title track, "Suki." A unexpectedly, melody-rich composition that pounds just as hard as their previous efforts.
7. "THIS 5321" - BJARKI [TRIP]
Bjarki's oddly-titled "This 5321" is a uniquely beautiful mishmash of pounding beats, stuttering drums, and a buzzing melody that skips across a soaring ambience like a tiny insect across a pond.
8. "HYPERICUM" - LUCA AGNELLI [DRUMCODE]
Luca Agnelli's last appearance on the 5th edition of A-Sides was a melodious, yet solemn affair called "Phoenix." However, this time around the Italian producer from Tuscany is taking a more hard-line approach with bigger drums, a menacing vocal sample, and stuttering synth-stabs that expertly syncopate across the top of the track's big, booming bass-line.
9. "THE CANNIBAL" - CHICOLA [TENAMPA RECORDINGS]
Israeli producer, Chicola returns to Tenampa Recordings with a trio of top tunes including this very effective dancefloor destroyer he calls "The Cannibal."
10. "RABBIT MOUNTAIN (REWORK)" - M.A.N.D.Y. [GET PHYSICAL MUSIC]
"Rabbit Mountain " was an obvious highlight of M.A.N.D.Y.'s Double Fantasy LP last year. Now just nine months later, the tune gets it's own release with three different revisions. An acid-heavy remix from Gerd Janson, a deeper dub version from the boys themselves, and of course this particular dazzling rework they've put together which highlights the bells and takes the listener on a blissful journey to a land called "Rabbit Mountain."
11. "PILGRIMAGE TO PARADISE (SPEKTRE RMX)" - SOURMASH [RESPEKT RECORDINGS]
Back in '93, I used to absolutely lose it to Sourmash's "Pilgrimage To Paradise!" The tune was a landmark in electronic music history when techno had somehow fractured into many different genres that soon paved their own way through the '90s. Progressive, breaks, trance, etc., All the genres were represented in this Sourmash classic.
But for those of you whose ears are fine tuned towards the current sound of techno, label-head Spektre has given this iconic sliver of techno history a brand new update that is guaranteed to rock a warehouse near you.
12. "PRESET HEAVEN" - ADAM BEYER, ENRICO SANGIULIANO [DRUMCODE]
Turn this one all the way up!
13. "BELIEVE" - ROB HES [TRONIC]
14. COLLECTIVE ENDEAVOURS 01.2 [HOTFLUSH RECORDINGS]
Hotflush's new VA comp is split into two parts and this second half I'm endearingly featuring since it kicks off with a posthumous contribution from Trevino. A very talented and accomplished producer who not only rocked the techno world but also made a very big mark in drum and bass with his Marcus Intalex alias.
15. "PUNK (MARK BROOM REMIX)" - SCHMUTZ [SUARA]
