Tom Petty has reportedly been taken off life support after being rushed to the hospital earlier today. According to TMZ, the legendary guitarist was found unconscious, not breathing and in “full cardiac arrest” at his Malibu home. He was taken to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, but doctors were unable to get any brain activity from Petty and the decision was made to take him off life support.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just wrapped up a long tour with three shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday, September 25.
In an already impossibly painful day for the music community as a whole after the events in Las Vegas last night, this is yet another awful turn of events today. These hands are numb typing this.
UPDATE: The previous report that Tom Petty is dead has been clarified and is not dead, but "barely clinging on to life," according to TMZ. LAPD incorrectly told CBS that he was dead.
UPDATE 2: Tom Petty unfortunately died last night at the age of 66. The news was confirmed by his family in a post on social media. He died peacefully among his family, friends and bandmates.
