The aftermath of the club collapse

Ever been to a venue and felt the floor shake underneath you because people are dancing so hard? That can be thrilling, until the floor actually gives way. A club on the Spanish Island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands had this happen over the weekend. The floor gave way late on Saturday night and plunged clubbers into the basement, injuring up to 40 people.

22 people had to be immediately evacuated from the club and another 18 took themselves to the hospital under their own power.

The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. at the club in Adeje in the south-west of the Spanish island. According to The Guardian, 4 sq m (43 sq ft) of its floor had given way, causing many of the patrons to fall through into the basement.

“After the floor collapsed, the people who were inside fell to the basement from the height of approximately one floor,” said the regional government in a statement. Many of the injuries included bruises, ankle sprains and even broken legs.
