A 30-year old DJ named Kaleb Freitas was killed and another three more were injured at Atmosphere Festival in Esteio, Brazil on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 17) in an awful stage accident.
According to local reports and video footage of the incident, the stage collapsed after high winds blew over part of the structure. The DJ was playing to an estimated crowd of 4,000-5,000 individuals when the stage buckled under the high winds. The structure came down on Freitas. He was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries soon after arrival.
The weather service had predicted inclement weather with wind, hail and torrential wind that afternoon. According to Globo, local authorities believed the event should have been canceled.
The festival released a statement (translated from Portuguese), which you can read below.
"We always cherish the safety of our public, following all the processes, reports and authorizations requested by the local authorities.
And to our audience, we will keep them informed of all our actions to keep the truth about the events occurred.
We are sorry; we lost a friend, an artist. Our priority is to assist the wounded and their families.
We thank the Military Brigade and the Fire Department for all assistance."
