With EDM practically dead and producers ditching house for techno, the genre is going through a relatively meteoric rise; a renaissance if you will. However, make no mistake that the artists featured here in the best of year chart are the real deal.
Highlights of the year include some very well-received full-length albums from Bicep, KiNK and Oliver Koletzki who all feature in the best-of-year chart. Other breakthrough artists included in the chart like Patrice Bäumel and Victor Ruiz dropped a plethora of groundbreaking singles which also feature in the chart. Not to mention, the up-and-coming, lesser-known producers who contributed tunes which were just as relevant. Thankfully, it's an underground genre based around tracks like the ones listed here which you will never hear on pop radio. You will only hear it places like this so get involved and check out the tunes. Like the artist pages, buy the music, and check out the D.J.'s once they visit your local club or warehouse.
1. "ORCA" - BICEP [NINJA TUNE]
The highest ranked techno track of the year is pure, euphoric bliss and it comes courtesy of Bicep who dropped their monumental, self-titled LP this past September. The absolutely magical tune is called "Orca" and it had the deserving honors of kicking it off the debut album which many are calling the electronic album of the year including yours truly.
2. "TRIGONOMETRY" - SASHA [WATERGATE]
Sasha's well-overdue debut on Watergate came in the form of an epic, two-part release which featured this dashing new composition called "Trigonometry." Sasha has outdone himself yet again.
3. "ABSTINENCE (OLIVER KOLETZKI REMIX)" - REINIER ZONNEVELD [STIL VOR TALENT]
Reiner Zonneveld's 2016 album, Megacity Servant was an an immaculate exercise in modern techno that seemed to be untouchable. That is until about five months later when a trio of remixes were released including this especially super-charged, re-rub by the label-boss himself, Oliver Koletzki.
4. "GLUTES" - PATRICE BÄUMEL [AFTERLIFE]

5. "THE EMPTY PAGE" - NIEREICH [100% PURE]
Austrian producer, Niereich's output on 100 % Pure this year was without a doubt a five star effort. It featured two brilliant tunes on one release including this contrasting B-side which is a highly unique stomper that nearly overshadows the title track thanks to two beautifully filtered melodies that perfectly coalesce into a gorgeous techno harmony.
6. "SO GOOD" - MONIKA KRUSE MEETS PIG&DAN [TERMINAL M]
7. "ASTRAL PROJECTION" - ENRICO SANGIULIANO [DRUMCODE]

11. "FUTURA" - UNDERCATT [DIYNAMIC]
12. "STRAND" - STEPHAN BODZIN [AFTERLIFE]
German keyboard wizard, Stephan Bodzin barely snuck this production beauty into 2017 and everyone has noticed because the track itself is sitting pretty right at the very top of the Beatport chart.
13. "NEUTRINO" - KINK [DGTL]
KiNK ended the year with a critically-acclaimed full-length and he started it with an impeccable two-tracker on DGTL which featured this ultra-melodic, brain-food the Bulgarian techno star calls "Neutrino."
14. "993" - BLAWAN [TERNESC]
The absolutely wicked "993" by UK-born, Berlin-based producer Blawan is an extraordinary example of unconventional techno which sharply focuses on originality without sacrificing the integrity of it's floor-focused features.

SAMA is a relatively unknown artist who made his/her debut this past September on Pleasurekraft's imprint with this pounding, ultra-dramatic, piece of techno titled "Existence."
