Sony is making a big play into China with the announcement that it is starting a label with Tencent Music Entertainment, the entertainment arm of Tencent, a tech conglomerate. The label, Liquid State, has been launched in Hong Kong and will focus on electronic music all across Asia.
The move could be important for Sony as they try and capitalize on the ever-growing Asian music market that is getting hooked onto dance music as well. Partnering with a local player like Tencent gives them the expertise, government connections and cache to work in China and Asia.
Alan Walker is the first artist to sign to the Alan Walker, who will reveal collaborations on the label in the coming months.
China’s Chris Lee, Hong Kong’s Nicholas Tse and Senugri, a member of South Korean collective BIGBANG are also signed.
“Asia has always been such a special place for me so I’m thrilled to help Sony Music and Tencent with the launch of Liquid State,” Walker said in a statement.
