In the middle of a generally cold season, house music warmed up the musical climate this past month with a variety of tunes that captured our hearts. Deep, tech, afro, and progressive, just to name a few, all made the cut this month. Regardless though, the unpopular task of categorizing tunes has proven to be mundane so without further ado, I urge you to immerse yourself in the beauty and vigor of these 15 glorious tracks which I've deemed the best of January 2018.
1. "DIDA" - SEBASTIEN LEGER [ALL DAY I DREAM]
Production veteran, Sebastien Leger makes his debut on Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream imprint with a pair of tunes that fit the label like a glove. Both encompassing that cinematic, dreamy vibe which is not only synonymous with the the label but the party series as well. The two-tracker is titled Lost Miracle and it features this b-side beauty that the Frenchman calls "Dida."
2. "HOLDING PATTERN" - KARMON [DIYNAMIC]
Dutch producer, Karmon has been casually putting out tunes since 2012 but with his most recent release this past Friday, he's set to make his biggest impact yet with an already well-received second edition of Diynamic's very own Picture series.
3. "AFTER EARTH" - BEN BöHMER [ANJUNADEEP]
If you listened to Yotto's fabulous Essential Mix this past weekend then you probably caught Anjunadeep's first big choon of the year. This bright and melodic affair oddly titled "After Earth" courtesy of Berlin-based producer, Ben Böhmer.
4. "THE UNDERGROUND (RONNIE SPITERI REMIX)" - HENRIX & CELEDA [CR2]
Relatively new producer, Ronnie Spiteri recently crushed it with "Multiply" just a few months ago on Knee Deep In Sound and here he is just a few months later crushing it again, except this time on London's CR2 imprint with a punchy as hell remix of Henrix & Celeda's "The Underground."
5. "STOP LORRAINE (NO ONE'S GUNNA STOP MIX)" - HEARTTHROB [PLAY IT SAY IT]
6. "THE SUN" - CHUS & CEBALLOS, DENNIS CRUZ [STEREO PRODUCTIONS]
The undisputed kings of tribal-tech-house return to their own imprint for a sun-kissed collaboration with rising tech-house star, Dennis Cruz and it's a heavily-percussive one. One they've appropriately titled "The Sun" which may be slightly out of season but it's a definitely playful teaser of the approaching warmer seasons when all things organic and euphoric start to fill the musical landscape.
7. "MAKE MY DAY" - HAZZARO [ERASE RECORDS]
This high-flying, Beatport charter which samples the '89 dance-pop hit, "Pump Up The Jam" packs a ton of groove suitable only for the biggest climax of the night.
8. "MOXY" - DARIUS SYROSSIAN [HOT CREATIONS]
It's been nearly half a decade since Manchester's Darius Syrossian put out Hot Creations' 32nd release and here he is back on the mammoth label with a red-hot, two-tracker including the title-choon he calls "Moxy."
9. "THE LAST DANCE" - EAGLES & BUTTERFLIES [ART IMITATING LIFE]
L.A. based producer, Chris Barratt aka Eagles & Butterflies just put out the third edition of his well-received Art Imitating Life series which includes a single tune defined in three different ways. Once as it's chill-out incarnation defined as the Synthapella, second as a throwback '90s style, progressive-breaks version called the Sunrise Mix and first and foremost as the grandiose original which is shaping up to be a very early candidate as tune of the year. Watch out for those goose-bumps.
10. "HORIZONS" - KEVIN DI SERNA [ENDLESS]
Press play, close your eyes, and smile to 2018's most optimistic piece of electronic music so far. The beautiful tune is titled "Horizons" and it comes courtesy of Argentinian producer, Kevin Di Serna.
11. "AMENE (FRANKEY & SANDRINO REMIX)" - ANDHIM [SUPERFRIENDS]
12. "SINGULARITY (BAILE REMIX)" - SASHA [LAST NIGHT ON EARTH]
13. "LITTLE LOVE" - PRIMITIVE TRUST [AUS MUSIC]
14. "TAI TAI" - M.E.M.O. [MOBILEE]
Dance music institution, Mobilee continues the trend of sophisticated electronic music output by opening up 2018 with a pair of charming, floor numbers by Spanish producer, Anselmo Alarcon, better known by his stage name, M.E.M.O.
15. "UMFAZI OMUHLE" - NANDU & OLUHLE [CONNECTED FRONTLINE]
The afro vibes go deep on this sparkling new collaboration between Danish producer, Nandu and a Zimbabwe-born, London-based vocalist, known as Oluhle.
