We dig into the best bass music of January with tunes from ZHU, Kasbo, Keys N Krates and Flava D all getting a nod.

Welcome to the first bass music chart of 2018. 

The bass music genre keeps evolving over the years, breaking into more exciting styles. Only one-month into the new year and the floodgate of stellar bass music has already begun to pour in. This month we explore new tracks from future bass to wave, right on through to fresh footwork tunes and new takes on the classic UK garage sound.     

1) EKALI & ZHU - 'BLAME' [OWSLA]

Canadian producer Ekali teams up with vocalist/producer ZHU on "Blame" and the results don't disappoint. ZHU's soaring falsetto vocals float perfectly over Ekali's stutteringly funky production.

2) WEIYU SHEN - 'ALPHA' [SIMPLIFY]

Weiyu Shen is a newcomer on the rise in the bass music scene. His latest release "Alpha" starts off with a catchy vocal hook before dropping into a head-nodding future bass bubbler.

3) KASBO - "ALDRIG MER" (FEAT. TENDER) [FOREIGN FAMILY/COUNTER]

Gothenburg-based producer Kasbo showcases his latest single "Aldrig Mer" from his debut album Places We Don’t Know out March 23rd via Foreign Family Collective/Counter Records. He says the single's title translates to “No More" in English, which is about getting over a past love.

4) HEROBURST - "VERTEBREAKER" (HABSTRAKT REMIX) [MAD DECENT]

After unleashing the heavy-hitting Vertebreaker EP last year, Atlanta producer Herobust is back with three unique spins on two of the project’s standout tracks, “Move Mint” and “Vertebreaker.” The bass music kingpin taps French house magnate Habstrakt for a new edit, who draws the title track into his forward-thinking, four on the floor universe.

5) TASKA BLACK - "SANDPAPER" FEAT. AYELLE [TASKA BLACK]

Belgium based producer Taska Black works with vocalist Ayelle on "Sandpaper." The track is more pop-driven than his previous work, but works on many levels from the dancefloor to the headphones.

6) DILLON FRANCIS - "VEN" FEAT.  ARCANGEL & QUIMICO ULTRA MEGA [IDGAFOS]

Dillon Francis taps the talent of Reggaeton stars Archangel & Quimico Ultra Mega on "Ven," the first single from his forthcoming album. The new album enlists the legend Toy Selectah as the executive producer. Dillon states on his Instagram, "I asked @toyselectah to help me source some vocals and we got into an amazing rhythm and I kept writing songs. We went to NY, Miami, Dominican Republic and Mexico City to work and it was some of the most incredible experiences ever." 

7) SAVOY - "DON'T QUIT ME NOW" [SAVOY]

Brooklyn based trio SAVOY are back with "Don't Quit Me Now," a funky electro tune fueled with their signature rock edged stylings and pulsing basslines.

8) ENJOII - "NIGHT CALL" [LIQUID RITUAL]

Wave music; a cross section of witch-house, downtempo, UK Garage, and early dubstep energy, has been gaining popularity in the past few years. Liquid Ritual is one of the labels consistently releasing quality tracks and Poland's Enjoii keeps to that standard on "Night Call," from his recently released EP Life Alone.

9) VACANT - "FLATLINE" [VACANT]

London based Vacant just released his debut album Origins and it's a moody masterpiece. The second track "Flatline" flows with a 2-step garage shuffle, drenched in cinematic sounds and beautiful haunting samples.

10) KEYS N KRATES - "DO WHAT U DO" [DIM MAK]

"Do What U Do" is the third single from Keys N Krates' highly anticipated debut album Cura. The track has a nostalgic disco-esque feel with its uplifting vocals and warm vibes. 

11) FLAVA D - "LOVE STORY" [SELF-RELEASED]

The queen of UK garage Flava D is back with a new EP More Love 2. Showcasing styles of bumpy garage and mellow R&B remixes like "Love Story."

12) DJ Q - "BASSLINE JUNKIE" [SELF-RELEASED]

DJ Q, one third of the garage dream team TQD, unleashes a new bassline banger on the aptly titled, "Bassline Junkie." Taken from Q's latest album All Night named after the shows he's been doing that features a wide spectrum of bass and garage with hints of house, grime and everything in between. 

13) DJ TAYE - "TRIPPIN" [HYPERDUB]

Footwork producer DJ Taye brings us "Trippin," the second single from his debut solo album Still Trippin, out on March 2 via Hyperdub. "Trippin" also features the producer rhyming over his own hypnotic production.

14) KABUKI & TICKLISH - "HOMEWORK" [VANDAL LTD]

French electronic record label Vandal Limited has recently dropped an impressive album titled Grand Royal. It features 17 footwork/jungle/halftime tracks, including this future anthem "Homework," by Kabuki & Ticklish.

15) DENGUE DENGUE DENGUE - "COBRE" [ENCHUFADA]

Rounding us out is a slice of global bass from the Peruvian duo known as Dengue Dengue Dengue. "Cobre" explores the unique blend of entrancing South American and African rhythms and melodies that has become their signature sound.
