Maybon is an artist who is on the ascent. Hailing from a tiny town in Norway, he draws on influences from a plethora of pop artists and is busy creating his own personal sound.
His latest work is "Everything I Do," which has been made with singer Alida. It is a brilliant collaboration, merging pop vocals with a deeply textured electronic vibe. We spoke to Maybon about his work - have a read below.
You’re carving out a really striking signature sound, and it’s no surprise your work is taking off. What is different about your sound now, from when you first started?
When I first started, I just created music that my ears liked. I didn't go for one specific style. However I got really hooked into one of the styles I created, which is what I call the Maybon Signature Sound today. After just creating a lot of music I ended up on the path that I am on now, and luckily for me, people like it!
What, to you, are some of the most enjoyable parts of producing new music? What do you gain from the process, and what helps you to improve as an artist?
The most enjoyable part is creating hooks that are so good that I can't stop working on the project. Every single that I have released has a hook like this, which makes it both easier to improve and finish the song.
For every track that I create, I feel like my music is improving - both my signature sound and the ability to create something that someone likes. Meeting new artists are also an important way to improve as an artist.
Who or what influences you musically? Do you find you get inspired by lots of different genres and styles?
I don't really have a favorite genre or artist, I like individual songs. There is so much good music out there from many different artists and genres, so it's very difficult to choose a favorite. Weird electronic music that somehow reaches a big audience is probably what inspires me the most!
Talk us through your new single with Alida… where did the first ideas come from? Did you enjoy working with her on the track?
The track was made on a songwriting camp where we were a group of 4. One music producer (me) and three singers/songwriters. We had a great time in the studio, and the track became catchy really quickly. Everyone did a great job, and there was also a lot of work on the tune after the writing camp as well.
What do you feel she brought to the table?
Alida has a super powerful pop voice: it fits perfectly to this production and works well for vocal sampling, which is a very important part of the Maybon sound.
How do you want your music to make people feel?
It depends on each individual single. But they all have one thing in common, which is a hook that brings you into the song. Some tracks I go for a more deeper, dark feel, like in "Majesty." For "Everything I Do," I went for a happy touch on the production.
What are your main focuses going to be throughout 2018?
Releasing good, unique music! I'm also working on a cool live show. I want to deliver something new to the stage and the audience, not just pressing play on a turntable.
