Kendrick Lamar is reportedly banning camera on his upcoming European tour. The DAMN rapper wants audience members to experience his show without spending half the time filming. He is even taking the step to not allow professional photographers into the auditorium of his show according to The Guardian.
The move comes as several artists have lashed out at phone use at concerts. Jack White said he would ban phones on his upcoming show. While it can be cool for photos or brief recap videos to see a sea of lit up phones in the audience, many artists do find it distracting. More importantly, it is a way for artists to preserve the image of their live show so others can’t see it through the lens of a grainy iPhone video with terrible sound. Also it ensures that each show is a surprise with set lists generally the same each time.
It isn’t clear if this will be something K.Dot does for all tour dates going forward or if this is just an experiment. Also there aren’t many details on his this will be enforced.
UPDATE: According to Pitchfork, Kendrick will allow fans to use their phones and take pictures at shows. However, media outlets and professional photographers won't be able to take pictures and his team will provide photos when necessary. This seems rather odd and doesn't make much sense, but it keeps the fans engaged I guess?
