Russian-born violinist and longtime Emancipator member, LAPA (Ilya Goldberg) is excited to announce the release of his second single “Dropping Bows.” It will be featured on his sophomore LP Spirit Vessel, out February 16th on Emancipator’s Loci Records. Recorded over the last year and a half, Spirit Vessel was made in LAPA’s Portland, Oregon home studio and uses various live instruments such as drums and percussion, electric bass, violin, charango, mandolin, vibraphone, and synthesizers.
On “Dropping Bows,” LAPA teams up with his longtime collaborator and percussionist Cedar Miller. Cedar is a renowned percussionist who has studied around the globe with master drummers from various traditions. Cedar has also collaborated with Random Rab and Emancipator over the last few years and performed on their last albums. Ilya first met Cedar at a collaborative gig with Random Rab at Boulder’s acclaimed Fox Theater in 2011. “Dropping Bows” is a symphony to your ears, which layers ambient electronic beats and percussion on top of a classic violin melody in order to create next level symphonic and cinematic production. “Dropping Bows” combines acoustic sounds, African drumming, and soulful beats to create a haunting ambiance that feels organic at its root.
Ilya had this to say about the release of his newest single, “’Dropping Bows’ embodies the co-creative magic that I have with my close friend and collaborator, Cedar Miller. The track is a musical expression of what was happening for us at the moment in our lives when it was written. It began with a single creative thread - dropping my bow onto the strings of the violin. From this simple rhythmic pattern, the rest of the music flowed organically and effortlessly, allowing us to be in awe of the magical moment that is this life.”
Ilya has spent the better part of the decade touring with Emancipator and performing at some of the nation’s leading festivals such as Bonnaroo and Electric Forest and venues such as Red Rocks.
With the release of “Dropping Bows,” Ilya proves his aptitude as a talented producer and instrumentalist. With a synthesis of analog, digital and found sounds, blending physical and virtual worlds, and with rooted support by drummer/instrumentalist Brandon Warren and multi-instrumentalist Nickles D’Onofrio, LAPA’s music presents a diverse and captivating collection of sounds from around the world.
LAPA describes his work as a “musical adventure and experience that blurs borders and transcends boundaries, illuminating the resonance of universal forces and teleporting people to wild, dream-like places of serenity and connection.” With the release of “Dropping Bows” and the highly anticipated release of Spirit Vessel, you can definitely expect to see LAPA performing on some of the nation’s leading festivals in the very near future.
