The Desert Hearts crew is about as tight nit as they come in dance music. Bringing that type of atmosphere to their shows around the US, they have developed into one of the more popular party and dance music brands in the US. With a burgeoning label, the collective is expanding its wings and bringing more into the fold. UK producer Cloonee is the latest to release a new EP on Desert Hearts today and we had Mikey Lion from Desert Hearts do a back-to-back interview with the newcomer to discuss a range of topics like DJing swinger parties in Mexico, the meaning of love, their respective starts, seeing people eat dirt and much more.

Listen to Cloonee's new three-track EP Bounce Back below as you dive into this interview. Pick up a copy of the EP here.

Mikey Lion: How did you first get into house music and what was your best musical experience of any genre?

Cloonee: I've always been a big fan of music ever since I was younger and listened to a lot of different genres. I seriously got into house music in 2014 when I went to University in Sheffield and went to see Patrick Topping and wAFF at a club called Fez, which is no longer open. That was the turning point for me. Best musical experience would easily be the first time one of my tracks was played on Radio 1. That was a pretty proud and surreal moment.

Mikey Lion: If you could live in any time period other than now, what would it be?

Cloonee: Without a doubt the late 80's in England during the peak of the Acid house movement, some of the warehouse parties looked ridiculous.

Mikey Lion: What are your goals for the year? What are your goals for the next 5 years? Could be music related or personal?

Cloonee: My goal for this year is pretty straightforward and that's to have a new release for every month of year. Its pretty straight forward again for my 5-year goals and that's just simply to be having fun and enjoying making music and DJ'ing. I find it can be quite easy to get caught up in the stresses that come along with this job so if I can focus on still having an amazing time whilst doing it then hopefully I'll be going for even longer than 5 years!

Mikey Lion: Who do you look up to musically or non musically?

Cloonee: A lot of people don't know this but the name "Cloonee" comes from the name of a lake in Ireland, which was my Granddads favourite lake to fish on. I grew up visiting Ireland and fishing on that lake with him so I'd say he's the person I most looked up to for numerous reasons, hence why my name is a tribute to him.

Musically though it would have to be Patrick Topping, purely because he was the one who got me hooked into this genre.

Mikey Lion: What does love mean to you?

Cloonee: Feeling like you belong. Also, when someone offers you some of their food without you asking.

Cloonee: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?

Mikey Lion: I would want the ability to party as hard as my partner Lee Reynolds without doing permanent damage to my brain or body. I've tried before. I don't have that ability.

Cloonee: How did the Desert Hearts movement first start?

Mikey Lion: We just wanted to throw a small, renegade party out in the middle of the desert for all our friends to DJ. We didn't have plans or anything to grow it into the beast it is today. It just kind of happened. The whole purpose of the party was to spread as much love and positive energy as possible. This must have resonated because people got on board with the ethos. The first Desert Hearts party was only a 200 person gathering, but after word spread of its ragingness, 900 people showed up to our second. We figured we better get some infrastructure under this passion project and the rest is history.

Cloonee: If you were stuck in an elevator with 1 person who would you choose and why? (Can be famous)

Mikey Lion: Right now I got to go with this comedian I'm super into named Duncan Trussel. The dude is just on another level and sees the world from the most unique point of view. He has a podcast called The Duncan Trussel Family Hour and it's fucking gold. Do yourself a favor and check it out. I would not be bored in an elevator with this man.

Cloonee: What is the weirdest/best story or thing you’ve seen happen at a show you’ve played or put on?

Mikey Lion: My brother Porky and I once played this amazing swinger party down in Mexico when all of a sudden, in broad daylight, this husky sized gentleman starts banging this girl on top of a rock for everyone to see. They were really putting on a show. That was the first time my brother and I looked at each other and were just like, "Hell ya we just made these people fuck!" I'm proud to say it wasn't the last time this happened, but that first time felt really good.

People shoveling dirt into their mouths on the festival dance floor is also always amusing.

Cloonee: You’re planning the best house party on earth. You can choose any 3 DJ’s to play and 3 celebrity guests to attend, who do you choose?

Mikey Lion: If I'm planning the best house party on earth, in the main room I got to go with my Desert Hearts Crew: Lee Reynolds, Marbs, & Porky. As a bonus dream booking, I have to go with Daft Punk Live circa 2007. Their show at Coachella in 2006 is what started it all for me.

For celebrity guests, I got to go with my boys Jim Carrey, George Carlin, & Dave Chappelle doing live standup in the side room. As a bonus I'd bring Donald Trump so the comedians can rip on him. Maybe Jim Carrey would give Ol' Donnie some magic mushrooms so he can feel what it truly means to be a human being.
