RZA, the de facto ringleader of the infamous hip hop group the Wu-Tang Clan, has announced a new run of shows for his widely sought after, RZA: Live from The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. This live show is a relatively new show concept that debuted in 2016 as an audio-visual experience that showcases RZA’s live scores of the 1978 Shaw Brothers classic martial arts film.
It is mostly commonly recognized as one of the greatest martial arts film of all time. RZA’s live rendition plays homage to the films critical role in shaping him as a young individual and later on as an artist, where he attributes much of his creative and artistic output to the vast influences found in The 36 Chamber of Shaolin. RZA found an instant draw and connection to the film’s depiction of the oppressed Chinese villagers and oppressive Manchu Authority akin to his own experiences as an African American growing up in the United States.
“Beyond the kung-fu, it was the reality of the situation that hit me. Growing up as a black kid in America, I didn’t know that that kind of story had existed anywhere else” -RZA
This childhood inspiration would find itself manifesting into the hip hop group we all can recount on, The Wu-Tang Clan. RZA has currently announced 5 show dates run through the second half of April in various key cities, one of which is Los Angeles, CA. RZA’s LA date will be will hosted at the iconic Palace Theatre, located right in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. The venue was built in 1911 as the third Los Angeles of the Orpheum Vaudeville circuit, renamed as the Palace Theatre in 1926, and is now the home to many landmark performances and film screenings.
RZA newest additions to the show will include a total re-score of the film from the opening scene to closing credits and is filled with seamless film cut scenes complemented with the Wu-Tang Clan’s discography spanning within the last 2 decades. Since his last sold out showcases in 2016, RZA has been patiently waiting to revive the live concept and put it back on the road.
