Los Angeles based electronic musician/producer John Glenn Kunkel, known to many as The New Division, is gearing up to release his Fader EP on May 11. Fans have already gotten a taste of the six-track project with “Signs,” but today we are really happy to present the masterful opening song “One Night In Tokyo”

“One Night In Tokyo” is everything you would want from The New Division and synthwave. It has booming drums and a broken beat carrying the song underneath a soaring melody of synths, fluttering vocal chops (in the pre-2014 sense) and some searing guitar with Kunkel’s somewhat distant, but very noticeable vocals telling a narrative of escapism.

"’One Night in Tokyo’ is about escapism. The way I write songs is a bit odd maybe but I like to sing about topics that don’t have any real connection to me. It’s a bit like story telling but injecting a small part of what I’m feeling into the narrative,” explains Kunkel to Magnetic. “This song is about an expat out one night in Tokyo escaping the pain of a recent breakup or failed relationship. In that process he’s seeking peace of mind and going about the city. The rest is up to the listener to decide."
