Magnetic and Halcyon SF are proud to announce the arrival of Joseph Ashworth this Saturday. The Anjunadeep superstar has been making massive waves the past couple years, and it's our pleasure to invite him to the city by the bay. But before we dance 'til dawn, we sat down with the artist to get the inside scoop on what he's been up to. Check it out below, and be sure to grab your tickets ASAP.
A few burning questions for rising Anjunadeep star Joseph Ashworth. Joseph you are on fire! Tell us a bit about how you’ve arrived at this moment in time. What sparked the flame?
I’ve been making music since I was a kid, so it’s been a long journey. I’m lucky, I get to make music every day and travel the world. I’ve particularly enjoyed the last year or so, touring the USA for the first time.
Your music is so euphonious. How’s that for a big word?! The sound is very specific and it really is incredibly pleasing to hear.
Thanks, it’s nice when someone notices the subtleties. I spend a long time on my tracks, and every element is considered and tweaked for hours - often I worry that I’m the only one who would notice!
How were you first connected with the super-label Anjunadeep?
Dom from the label emailed me a few years ago and asked for unsigned music. Haha, not the wildest story. The Anjunadeep team as a really sweet, genuine bunch of guys and I’m really lucky to be able to release music with them. I actually had no idea how big the label was at the time, especially in the United States. I remember looking them up after they approached me, and found Dusky - Mr Man. Such a beautiful, classy track - it sold me on the label instantly. I still play it all the time.
We cant wait to hear your new Anjunadeep release “Cascade”. What can we expect from this track when it releases?
I made it together with an amazing vocalist, Chris from Run Rivers. I’m massively proud of this one - musically it’s written as a song first, club track second, but it just happens to slams on a big sound system.
Following Cascade, I have a collaboration with Catz and Dogz on Dirty Bird coming out in June, and then a full 3 track EP on Life and Death which I’m putting the finishing touches to.
You released the epic track “Carmine” on Jonas Rathsman’s Elements label, with Jonas doing a stellar remix. How did that come about?
I’ve known Jonas for a few years - such a lovely and talented guy! We’ve DJ’d together a few times and released ‘Esme,’ a track we made together. I was in his studio in Gothenburg last month actually working on another EP.
We love Jonas. Cool that you two found each other! What’s the relevance of the name “Carmine”?
When I’m struggling to find a title for a track, I sometimes find an extensive list of all the colour names, and give my track a colour. ‘Carmine’ is this deep red, somehow it suited the track I thought.
Your tour schedule has been pretty heavy of late including a tour in India! What was the best thing about India?
I go to India a couple of times a year and have built up a nice fan base in the main party cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Goa). Obviously I love the food, but my favourite thing about India is the people. The guys I meet are so warm and open, and also hilariously funny.
And of course, we must ask, what was the worst?
Traffic/travel/airports. It took me 31 hours to get back to London from on my last trip. Traumatic!
You were on the Indian subcontinent for New Year’s Eve. Where were you and what were you doing?
I was! It was amazing actually - I played this sundown party in Hyderabad with 16 Bit Lolitas.
What would you like to be doing next New Year’s Eve and where?
I’d love to be somewhere hot, like Mexico or South America. It’s funny actually, in London UK where I live, there’s almost a negative feeling about NYE - where everyone avoids parties. I love being a Londoner but we get so cynical sometimes, so take me somewhere fun!
We are excited to have you in San Francisco! SF is so diverse. It is a beautiful and charming lady with a wild and wacky streak. If you could describe yourself as any city in the world, what would it be and why?
I’m so excited to play San Francisco, especially at Halcyon. A city - I’ve pretty much become London! - I've lived here so long...
