With so many quality bass music releases in July, it was tough to narrow it down to just 15. We did our best to pick the finest moments in future bass, freeform/experimental bass, footwork, bass house, wave, and dnb for the mid summer month.
1) SHADES – ‘ALARMA’ FT. KILLA P [DEADBEATS]
Representing both sides of the Atlantic, SHADES is the creative meeting of minds of two of bass music’s most unhinged producers, Alix Perez (UK) and Eprom (USA). Their impressive debut album, In Praise Of Darkness is a deep and freeform display of boundary pushing bass music experimentalism. “Alarma” features the spitfire vocals of Killa P over industrial drenched beats and echoing bass.
2) NGHTMRE & WAVEDASH - 'GRAVE' [MAD DECENT]
NGHTMRE & WAVEDASH have collaborated on one of the hardest releases of the summer, a monstrous bass-driven track aptly titled "Grave" out on Mad Decent. The track's bones are built from stabbing percussion, lacerating synths and a menacing underlying bassline. "Grave" is the track to play to unleash pent-up anger or at peak rave time.
3) GREAT DANE – ‘ELEVATE’ [BASSRUSH]
Insomniac’s Bassrush imprint debuts its first full length album in time for their Bassrush Massive festival in July. The 19-track compilation of heavy bass music features many of the acts who played the event and includes 11 brand-new, exclusive tunes. “Elevate” is one of those exclusives from Los Angeles’ Great Dane, who is hot on the heels of his impressive album Gamma Ray. The track hits hard over vintage reggae vocal snippets and distorted dirty basslines.
4) DAIJO – ‘SHOT TO MY HEART’ FEAT. TORY LANEZ [DAIJO MUSIC]
"Shot To My Heart" is a sweet blend of future bass featuring the syrupy smooth vocals of Tory Lanez. Canadian producer Daijo expresses about the collab, “I have been a fan of Tory's for a long time and being in the studio together felt very natural, he is an absolute talent and I hope everyone enjoys this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.”
5) PEEKABOO – ‘MANIAC’ [WAKAAN]
PEEKABOO returns to the Wakaan label with another 4 track EP of freeform bass hammers. Underpinned by growling basslines and sprinkled with neatly cut chops and samples, the title track “MANIAC” is a slice of heaven for those who like their beats off-centre and wild.
6) 1788-L - 'F U L L / B U R S T' [DEADBEATS]
The mysterious 1788-L first caught our attention on the track “Hex” with hypno bass producer REZZ. Now the unidentified moniker is back with “FULL/BURST,” the first single from the upcoming SENTIENCE EP on Deadbeats in late August. The track mechanically slaps with squelching bass and twisted robotic sci fi samples weaving throughout. Get lost in it.
7) FREDDIE MARTIN – ‘FEEL’ [SOUTHPOINT]
Brighton’s Freddie Martin drops his debut EP on the reliable Southpoint imprint. The title track “Feel” is jam packed with emotion, showcasing Freddie's finesse as he layers cinematic introductions with poignant original vocals and sweeping atmospherics, leading to an explosive bass driven peak.
8) PROXY – ‘SHAKE IT’ [BINGO BASS]
Moscow based producer Proxy makes his debut on Bingo Bass with “Shake It,” and it’s a soundsystem banger. With releases this year already through the likes of Insomniac, This Ain’t Bristol and Night Bass, the Russian producer has built up a serious reputation as one of the most consistent names in the bass house scene.
9) QNOE & SICSTYLE – ‘I DO’ [WILE OUT]
German bass producers Qnoe and Sicstyle team up to deliver a catchy adrenaline rising tune in “I Do.” Together they create a massive footwork track sampling the classic 00's RnB sound of Nelly & Kelly Rowland. Listen and repeat.
10) BREAKA – ‘DAMN HOT’ [BEAT MACHINE RECORDS]
Leeds bred, London-based producer Breaka offers up the next installment in the ‘Swinging Flavors’ 7-inch vinyl series from Beat Machine Records. In true form, Breaka delivers an ear perking footwork jungle track on “Damn Hot” that skips along over bouncy basslines, while the flipside remix from Danny Scrilla turns the track into a more aggressive UK rave anthem.
11) S.P.Y – ‘GREY DAYS’ [HOSPITAL RECORDS]
S.P.Y brings back the mid 90’s jungle style on “Grey Sounds,” a homage to the foundations of drum & bass. The throwback vibes ring strong with pitched up vocals and eerie undertones over subtle and subdued bass tones. Jungle never sounded so fresh.
12) FRICTION & JP COOPER – ‘DANCING’ (DAWN WALL REMIX) [ELEVATE]
Drum & bass producer Friction has unveiled a new remix EP for his latest single “Dancing,” a collaboration with acclaimed vocalist JP Cooper. Taken from Friction’s upcoming Connections album, “Dancing” receives three reworks, with mysterious d&b producer Dawn Wall the first to spin his own take on the original featuring his own liquid style, blending rolling percussion with lush pads for an uplifting affair.
13) GREMLINZ & JESTA – ‘EMPTY PROMISES’ [METALHEADZ]
The Canadian duo of Gremlinz & Jesta make their debut on the Metalheadz imprint, with a 4-track EP full of energetic percussive drum & bass. The title track “Empty Promises” rolls over funky chopped up breaks with warm organic basslines. A welcome addition to the classic Metalheadz catalog.
14) FOREIGN CONCEPT - KILMERSDON [CRITICAL MUSIC]
Foreign Concept returns to the Critical label with a brand spanking new 5 track EP called Gozen. The lead off track "Kilmersdon" is a tech stepping drum & bass wobbler that swirls in low end and punches you in the gut.
15) OUTSIDR – ‘CELLS’ [LIQUID RITUAL]
East London based producer Outsidr drops a new single with the Liquid Ritual label on “Cells.” Starting with slow ambient soundscapes and vocal samples, “Cells” quickly develops into a bass-heavy track with warm low end tones that are both soulful and reflective. Expect to hear this track on tastemaker wave sets
