Premiere: The Magician Delivers Fun, Funky, Retro Remix For Michael Calfan 'It's Wrong'

The Magician adds a retro vibe to the soulful tune.
The Magician

The Magician is someone who has remained as important as ever for house music, defying the odds in the social media age where it seems as though you need more and more all the time. Instead he bides his time with a few releases a year, his weekly Magic Tapes and DJ sets that are always fun. Now he is taking on Michael Calfan’s “It’s Wrong” for a fresh, retro-feeling remix of the record.

The Magician keeps the soulful vocal and feeling from the original and then adds his own flavor to the track. He adds a playful piano melody on top of the record, while a funky bassline gives the groove a new lease on life. A guitar lick enters the fray at the end to cap off the retro feeling of “It’s Wrong.” The remix would work at a posh pool party or in a dark nightclub.

“When Michael Calfan played me the demo version of “It’s Wrong” I was like ‘Mmmmm that’s a winner,’ remarks The Magician. “Then he asked me to remix it. I find it cool to transform a house track to a disco/pop track, so I kept the vocal and worked on a live bass and guitar. It has a Phoenix type of sound with a 90’s retro futuristic lead."

Michael Calfan is someone who has adapted well to the changing climate of dance music. Once someone who made his name putting out big, melodic records through Axtone, he has gone back to making house music, but with some of those same melodic ideas mixed in. It’s Wrong” is a continuation of that, but in a soulful direction.

Calfan calls this is a “classy retro/future vibe remix” and explains to Magnetic how this all came together. “I met Stephen back in 2015 and we have shared music and parties since that time. I am very happy to have his special touch on ‘It’s Wrong.’”

The remix will be released tomorrow, September 28, but until then, stream it below.
