Every October the electronic music industry gathers in Amsterdam for the ADE, otherwise known as the Amsterdam Dance Event. It's a week-long marathon of beer drinking, power meetings, nightclubs, and hangovers for those in the dance music business. Every DJ, publicist, promoter, media outlet, and super fan is in the city of XXXs to celebrate this global culture and do their best to get some work done at the same time.
This year we partnered up with TOPO Designs to put some of their fall/winter gear to the test in a city that can throw a lot of different weather at you in one week.
TOPO is one of our favorite brands out there right now, from bags to apparel, these guys are just getting it right across the board. Street wear sensibility with touches of alpine styling, their gear is perfect for traveling and can handle just about any social situation (in our world at least). Check out our up coming gift guide for more styles or visit their site at www.topodesigns.com.
Fall is usually a toss of up of rain, drizzle, and overcast skies in the Dam, but this year we caught a bit of a break with some sunny-ish weather which made life a little easier, for a couple of days at least.
Running around town requires a layering system that will take you from sunny mornings to rainy and cold evenings, all while looking presentable. Start with TOPO's Long Sleeve Wool Tee ($99) as a base layer, this will keep your body temp regulated well - warm or cold. Another benefit of merino wool is that it resists odors and can be worn multiple times without washing - great for traveling light.
The Chambray Shirt ($89) paired with Trucker Jacket ($189) brings enough warmth to manage weather in the 40s and looks right for just about every casual situation. Throw on a Camp Hat if the hangover is too much - it works.
The Dam as many ADEr's call it has a mysterious XXX association, and no it's not because of the red light district. This is from the city's coat of arms meaning valiant, steadfast, compassionate, so get your mind out of the gutter and you have to admit they look pretty damn cool.
Aside from the cool "logo" this is one of our favorite cities in the world for its culture and unique aesthetic, and around every corner is something unique or delicious - Bitterballen and beers anyone?
One of our favorite pieces from the fall collection is the Breaker Shirt Jacket, it comes in various colors, has a zip chest pocket and a two way stretch nylon material with a DWR finish to keep the rain at bay in a pinch. Insanely comfortable, warm and can take beer spillage like a champ. Yes, that happened.
If you are a music lover then it's worth taking the time to sniff out some of the city's cool little record stores like Zap Records, filled with all sorts of gems. I found a copy of the Massive Attack Singles 90/98 box set with the heat sensitive box!
If you are looking for the cutting edge in electronic music and beyond, then Rush Hour Records is an absolute must visit. Check their online store here and don't blame us if you drop a ton of loot on the first visit - you've been warned. http://www.rushhour.nl/
If the elements start to get disagreeable then pull out the last line of defense, the Tech Trench 3L to battle off the rain. This jacket is the perfect outer layer for all sorts of weather, even snowy days - just wear a nice wool sweater underneath. The jacket also breathes well so you don't get too uncomfortable if you doing a lot of activity - like walking to meetings in the rain!
You always return home from ADE a bit winded, a little fatter and ready for a couple days in bed to let your internal organs recoup from the abuse. Big thanks to TOPO for outfitting our adventure and Seth Combs for being a photographer on the fly. See you next year!
