Interview + Studio Tour: Rudosa [We Are The Brave]

Ever wondered what it looks like to build a studio in a less than ideal space?

Building your first studio can seem like such a daunting task. What should it look like? What gear needs to be in it? Does the space available match your ideal setting? Fortunately, with social media allowing for instant access into your favorite artists' working environments, all these questions are much easier to answer. Recently, DJ and producer Rudosa just completed his new studio, and it looks fantastic. Ahead of his upcoming release on Alan Fitzpatrick's We Are The Brave, we caught up with him to discuss the process of building both the track and the studio. 


First off, thank you so much for stopping to chat with us today. Tell us, how has 2018 been for you so far, both as an artist and for your own personal development/well-being?

2018 so far has been amazing as an artist. My sound has really started to reach and resonate with people and I’ve become a lot busier with all aspects of being a DJ. Personally, this has made me a lot happier as it’s great to achieve goals you have been working towards for nearly 10years.

The big news here is that you've got a new 3-track EP coming on We Are The Brave, to which we say a massive congrats. What was the journey like getting to this point?

Thanks, I’m really excited about it as the label is flying at the moment and I think this release will do really well. Especially the lead track ‘Activated’.

The journey to this point has been over a long period of time but like anything in life, good things take time and hard work.

Speaking on the EP, there seems to be an underlying feeling of urgency in each tune, which we love. The energy constantly builds from the first track into the last. Was this intentional, or did it all just happen to work out that way?

Yes, the energy is a key part to my music for sure. With this EP, Alan and I wanted to build something special, so we worked hard on making sure we had the perfect 3 records over a number of months. ‘Activated’ was the first then ‘Hypoxia’ and finally ‘It’s Time’ - we wanted something melodic that could be a set closer style track, so it’s naturally progressed into the EP it is now.

What were some of your tools you used to make the EP? Hardware? Software? Did anything carry over throughout the release?

So, I always use elements in my records I’ve used before, as it gives me a sound example of that is certain drum elements and the groove. In techno for me the most important bit is the low-end, so I tend to spend a long time on each record on this. A plugin that has helped me a lot with kicks and low-end in general has been the D16 Punchbox, combine that with bass from Spectrasonics Trillian, and you have a deadly combo. Mix that with things I have from UAD that I use a lot to get things sounding polished. Effects wise I use Soundtoys on everything and for lead sounds my go to plugins are Arturia V collection. I do own a Virus Ti Desktop 2 also which I use sometimes but not on this EP.

On the topic of tools, word on the street is you just had an amazing new studio built. What made you want to build a studio? What was the concept or theme you had in mind? Were there any setbacks?

I did indeed. I own a DJ school in Manchester and we looked to move from our home above Sankeys to a new place we could do studio builds and constructed soundproof classrooms. Building a studio had been on my agenda for a few years and I had seen Jan Morels work on some builds in Holland for some huge artists. Not only do Jan designs look insane but they are done correctly and they sound incredible. When we moved into the space Jan, came over and we set to work on a design in a room upstairs. 


The space upstairs had a vaulted ceiling and was an odd shape with huge church style windows, so the first challenge would be to build a room in a room. This would involve moving the door and construction of a box room inside the room. We then filled the first layer of walls with Knauf, a similar material to Rockwool, and boarded them up. Once the box was done we then added bass traps. From the back to the front we added angled walls to meet the bass traps and also added a 3 angled ceiling to the room. Getting the angles Jan wanted was a challenge, but we did it. The builder said we used more insulation than he would of for a whole house build.

Once the shape of the room was done we had to bring in electrics for each LED wall panel, and do the first fix before adding soundproof plasterboard and then plaster it. Once this was dry and decorated, we added the LED panels and a studio spec door. It was ready for Jan to return and fit out the acoustic treatment.


We used a company called Vicoustic for this using a combination of Cinema rounds, Flexi wave and Diffusors which gives it a real futuristic feel. Before the acoustic treatment went in, the room felt lively with a slight echo but as soon as the cinema rounds went on the walls it became totally flat and a perfect space to work.


We then set up some new Genelec 8351’s and the room was done! It sounds totally insane and a great environment to work in. Without a doubt, I wouldn’t be producing the quality of work I am without doing it.

One last question for you. Where do you ideally see yourself in 5 years, and what major milestones would you like to have under your belt in that timeframe?

I’d like to be an established international touring DJ/Artist with a family and a good team around me. Setting up a label and building something respected is a long-term goal and also having multiple Make Me A DJ schools around the UK or world would be cool also.
