If last month is any indicator, 2019 is going to be a very exciting year for electronic music. From high-octane aural assaults to avant-garde sound collages and everything in between, I take great pleasure in showcasing you the variety of bass music with Januarys highlights.
1) BETONKUST & PALMBOMEN II - "BART'S JAM" [DEKMANTEL]
Following hot on the heels of their brilliant Center Parcs album last year, the two talented dutchmen have created more original material with their Parallel B EP released on DEKMANTEL. The stand-out track for me is “Bart’s Jam.” With its exotic eastern vibe, retro video game feel and playful IDM sensibilities, it’s a dynamic and engaging piece of music.
2) DIE SELEKTION - "KALTER ATEM (TOMMY FOUR SEVEN REMIX)" [AUFNAHME + WIEDERGABE]
Tommy Four Seven has brutally torn apart Die Selektion’s "Kalter Atem" and re-stitched the carcass back together in his own twisted vision, creating a kind of, beautiful Frankenstein. It’s an aggressive, hard-hitting and soul shaking industrial remix and a must listen for January.
3) SILK ROAD ASSASSINS - "BLOOM" [PLANET MU]
Taken from Silk Road Assassins debut LP on PLANET MU State of Ruin, comes this awesome uplifting piece of electronic music. I can almost feel the wind on my face as I ascend into the glowing embrace of Shambhala.
4) SILAS & SNARE -"PAIMPOLS THEME" [BROTHERHOOD SOUND SYSTEM]
The epic 8-minute track from UK based up-and-comers Silas & Snare creates a mystical cadence with its ambient sections, pan flutes and oriental vibe. It’s an elegant and progressive piece of music that moves the body as well as the mind.
5) MANA – "SOLO" [HYPERDUB]
Following from his 2017 debut on HYPERDUB, Spanish producer Mana is ready to release his first full length LP this April. The first single "Solo" is a drumless, unpredictable and unnerving sonic landscape that uses electronics to imitate the organic. It also feels the audio version of some esoteric abstract painting.
6) SARYA AL SAWAS- "BAS ASMA3 MINI (MOVING STILL EDIT)" [DAR DISKU]
Moving Still has taken Syrian singer Sarya Al Sawas’s well-loved wedding song and magnified its inherent rhythm with his tasteful use of modern production. The remix has retained the identity of the original while at the same time bumping the dancefloor factor up a considerable notch.
7) CODE WALK – "TOUCH" [PEDER MANNERFELT PRODUKTION]
Sometimes people just don’t have the patience to purvey the subtle elements in an artist’s postmodern masterpiece, sometimes they just want to hit the dancefloor and loose themselves in a sweat-drenched drug-fueled trance and this solid ostinato is the perfect mantra for that activity.
8) LIPELIS - "BORDEAUX LOVIN" [PUBLIC POSSESSION]
Russian beatsmith Leonid Lipelis delivers the goods yet again with this wholesome feel-good house track. Its romantic sensibilities inspire a sense of warmth in even the blackest of hearts and proves that some formulas, no matter how tried or tested, just never get old.
9) FIT SIEGAL & KASSEM MOSSE – "SABOTEN" [FIT]
This admirable collaborative effort is saturated in energy and a subtle sense of trepidation that looms in the background. In the space between those moments of looming cataclysm the track serves its purpose as a solid, yet slightly bugged-out house track.
10) PFIRTER - DEFIANCE [STOCKHOLM LTD]
This is atmospheric techno at its finest, the low-pitched choral pads add a sense of occult theatrics and as this track develops you can feel yourself pushing further into the bowels of the nether-realm with pale black robed priests marking your damned passage. It’s dark, it’s dank and its dope.
11) PABLO DREAD – "FYAH BURNIN" [BEAT MACHINE]
Released on Beat Machine from his upcoming EP Burnin, Malaga-based Pablo Dread has created a nostalgic taste of jungle with a modern veneer, it occasionally stretches the parameters of its scope, but after all it is 2019 and that is definitely reflected in this track.
12) CIENFUEGOS - "SLIPPING VENUS (ENTRO SENESTRE)" [BANK]
The BANK records head honcho infuses Cienfuegos ambient piece "Slipping Venus" with some serious gusto and the result is a body that didn’t have a skeleton now having one and one that likes to dance, quite a lot.
13) STANLEY SCHMIDT - "SMART REPLIES" [VIENNA]
The title track from Stanley Schmidt’s upcoming EP, Smart Replies gives me a Carbon-Based Lifeforms World of Sleepers vibe. It is a spirited track with lush ambient sections, A.I samples as well as a contending background pulse that offers a pleasing contrast.
14) AQUARIAN - "TEN YEARS" (LEATHER JACKET REMIX) [FORTH]
I can’t find the original but who cares it’s probably not as good as this remix. It’s thumping breakbeat rhythm and heavy bassline drive it forward comfortably, but they say good things come to those who wait. If I were you, I would take that advice to heart on this bad boy right here.
15) KWARTZ - "DISTORTED REALITY PT 2 (VSK REMIX)" [ETERNAL DAMNATION]
You can feel the anger and fury from the beginning of this remix by VSK, his first release on ETERNAL DAMNATION. The aggressive ostinato charges forward like a feral bull unimpeded by any obstacle, until he sees red. Now he’s burning through the atmosphere about to headbutt the sun.
