Breakdancing has been proposed for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Paris Olympic Games have proposed adding breakdancing to the 2024 games alongside three other sports, skateboarding, surfing and climbing.
The proposal now goes to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Breakdancing was included in the 2018 Youth Olympics in Brazil, where Russian Sergei Chernyshev took home the gold for the boys and Japan's Ramu Kawai won the girls' title. The next step is to get it into the main senior event.
Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris organizing committee says the sport would make the Olympics more "more urban" and "more artistic."
The Youth Olympics saw head to head battles and it is reported that this would be the format used in Paris according to the BBC.
There are a lot of sports you probably don’t care about or watch like equestrian, artistic swimming or weightlifting. Something as active, free-flowing, kinetic and spontaneous as breakdancing is fun to watch on the street. Now put it on television with some of the best in the world and you will have fireworks. With four of five years to prepare, the crews would come from all genres and represent hip-hop, house, breakbeats and more for electrifying showcases of culture that don't normally have a place at the Olympics.
