Sónar Reykjavík 2019 has been canceled because budget airline WOW Air has ceased operations. What would have been the seventh edition of Sónar in Iceland has been canceled according to a statement by the festival because the airline’s collapse now impacts half of attendees and many artists scheduled to perform.

The statement continues, noting a delicate situation in Iceland and that they didn’t have enough time to adjust given that the festival was scheduled to take place April 25-27.

“This, compounded by an extremely delicate local situation in Iceland, has regrettably meant that Sónar Reykjavik cannot guarantee the same calibre of experience we have provided over the last six years, both for artists and fans. In light of this, and given the short amount of time remaining until the festival, we are faced with no other choice but to announce its cancellation for this year.”

The festival was scheduled to have artists like Yves Tumor, Orbital, Richie Hawtin, Objekt and Avalon Emerson perform.

All tickets will be refunded. If you booked flights through WOW, that may not be the case.

This is also a cautionary tale for flying budget airlines. Yes they can be cheaper, but also they may just go bust.
