If the news is anything to go by it would seem the promises of civilisation are still falling short of peoples expectations. Those grim tidings have done little to stifle the creativity of this months artists however, instead they have channelled the darkness that surrounds us and converted it into light. We have a beautiful new track from none other then Burial, A dank cut from Zombys new EP, a euphoric banger from DJ Seinfeld and an industrial powerhouse from I Hate Models.
1) BURIAL - CLAUSTRO [HYPERDUB]
There are few artists in electronic music that's releases, no matter how small, will herald a wave of public hysteria like Burial does. It's simply impossible for any of his work to go under then radar because each piece is so exquisitely crafted from emotion, mood and energy. His electric, upbeat and typically moving new single "Claustro" flirts with jumped up RnB vibes and hits you in the ticker from the outset. It will be released June 14th on Hyperdub along with the B side, State Forest. Very exciting news indeed.
2) ELIEZER - BAUHAUS (FEAT.CURSES) [LA DAME NOIR RECORDS]
You may have noticed i like to play unusual and oddball music on this list from time to time. This alternative bassy badboy from Tel Aviv based Eliezer is a hybrid of post punk new wave and modern bass music. Luca Venezia's vocals genuinely sound like some major hit from the eighties. I guarantee you this will be in your head for days.
3) I HATE MODELS - ROMANTIC PSYCHO [PERCTRAX]
I Hate Models is a mysterious chap that resents musical labels and has taken steps to obscure his image from the world. His first album L'Âge Des Métamorphoses, releasing on Perc Trax 21st June, is an absolute juggernaut. An industrial powerhouse of unimaginable magnitude, it is the electronic equivalent to head banging mosh pit metal. I cant tell you how many times the heavy thumps of "Romantic Psycho" have taken over bodily functions and made me impromptu head-bang on the street. A gritty, hardcore and infectious track that straddles the lines of many genres without giving itself over to any of them.
4) DJ SEINFIELD - ELECTRIAN [YOUNG ETHICS]
This dreamy euphoric cut from DJ Seinfeld Galazy EP is oozing soul and optimism. A soundtrack to the astral romance of yesteryear or of one yet to be. The smooth female vocals hearken back to the days of trance while the production has its feet firmly placed in contemporary tastes. "Electrian" is saturated in a gauzy ambience and driven by relentless breakbeats that clearly have a destination, but ultimately the whole tracks is the journey. And its one you wont want to end.
5) BRANDT BRAUER FRICK - MASSE [BECAUSE MUSIC]
Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick are a trio from Berlin that have been blending classical and electronic music together for a while now. Their latest record Echo is a sublime collection of their typically unique fusion of tastes, styles and methods. Its like a box of chocolates with every track having a different, feel texture and flavour. Their first single "Masse" is definitely the big purple one. The piano, violin, drums and synthesizer come together perfectly on this banger, forging a sense of suspense and mystery. A must listen for May.
6) ZOMBY - VOID [BEDOUIN RECORDS]
The badboy is back with another banger. When it comes to bass music, Zomby has been a stalwart vanguard of the scene since the beginning, watching genres come and go in popularity, his sound has remained rooted in the basic formula they inherited from the 90's rave scene, while discarding their extravagances. Hi new EP Vanta continues that tradition. "Void" is a deep dank minimal cut that doesn't stray to far from his idiosyncratic bass-driven sound, but then again would you really want him too?
7) COUCOU CHLOE - SILVER B [NUXXE]
It's fair to say Coucou has been making serious waves since moving to London from France, both for her personal style and her signature slurry, doped out sound. Having recently formed her own label NUXXE with frequent collaborators Oklou, Sega Bodega and Shygirl, Coucou has released her first EP on the label, called Naughty Dog. Silver B is the first single from the EP, it reminds me of a hazy, tripped out Witch House joint except with a bit more sugar sprinkled on top. P.S i fancy her.
8) PLAID - MARU (ORBITAL REMIX) [WARP]
It goes without saying that getting a remix by Orbital is a pretty big deal for any producer. Even if you do consider them your friends. Maru was a great track before the dance music vets took there hand too it, but now its buzzing with energy and electricity. The track is taken from the forthcoming album Polymer out 7 June on Warp Records.
9) MOODYMAN - I'LL PROVIDE [KDJ]
This oddball cut from Moodymans upcoming EP Sinner out on June 21st is a wonderful testament to the Detroit natives growing artistic peculiarities. Making digestible dance music is not his current concern, "I'll Provide" has more of an experimental value. A messy patchwork of sounds interposed with breathers of a slick baseline and the vocal. "I got something for your dirty nasty needs" The tracks makes a sudden transformation toward the end turning into a smooth RnB joint. I personally dig it.
10) FALTY DL - ONE FOR UTTU [UNKNOWN TO THE UNKNOWN]
Falty comes through with the goods on this IDM freak-out homage to the multimedia collective Unknown to the Unknown. On the track a A.I voice spells out the labels name then repeats its throughout and about a third way through the beat picks up with an increased surge of energy and tempo. This is one of four tracks on his debut EP for the label.
11) CIRCLING VULTURES - SLUDGE [SOFT MACHINE]
Soft Machine is a new label from L.I.E.S affiliate Justin Aulis Long designed to showcase underground american artists. This EBM cut from the first release has got 80's D.I.Y wave minimal sensibilities and chopped and screwed vocalwork featuring the existential musings of Bataille and Artaud.
12) FARRAGO - NEONTRANCE [LENSKE RECORDS]
This deep bassy cut from Farrago's new EP is a smooth nostalgic piece of dancefloor excellence that will spark Deja Vu of all-nighters in Cream and eye contact with your future soulmate on the dancefloor. The push at 1:50 is sublime and it continues to climb and drop throughout, dipping into several lows and highs.
13) GLADIO - DE ASTRA PLANETI [L.I.E.S]
A masterclass in analogue electro from Gladio (aka Danny Wolfers) new album Means To Freedom. It's a bit of a mood swinger but that is its appeal.
14) FRED QUEST - 10961 ALLEE (FT. LOW END ACTIVIST) [HOLDING HANDS]
Taken from the Wum EP, this shapeshifitng cut is packing quite a lot of vibes, from the funkiness in the beginning, to the hot sec of soulfulness and its final form as a bassy barebones bomb. This track will keep you intrigued and interested for sure.
15) LADY LYKES - LYKE U [HYPERDUB]
We started with a Hyperdbub track and i think we will end with one too. This mashup of grime, dancehall and hip-hop is produced by Scratchclart (formally known as Scratcha DVA) and inspired by Lykes Jamaican heritage. The lyrics are pretty tongue in cheek funny and the beat is calm as you like.
