Review: Above & Beyond Drop Meditative, Blissful Ambient Album 'Flow State'

Now you can flow with Above & Beyond for some of the most relaxing 50 minutes you will have all week.
Above & Beyond

Need a moment? Need a break from it all to just relax? Above & Beyond have often been a group to soundtrack a peaceful state of mind with their early work and are back at it with their new meditative and yoga album Flow State.

As one might expect from an album with that purpose, it is chilled out ambient electronica all the way through. There are three previously released songs that fans will recognize “Small Moments,” Group Therapy’s “Sun In Your Eyes” and the title track to their recent LP Common Ground, but the bulk of the 17 track LP is unreleased material.

The album delivers on its promise to be introspective and soothing. It helps to unlock those moments of bliss and peace in a world where everything is flying one million miles an hour. Writing this with the remnants of a migraine still pulsing in my brain, this album is one of the few things soothing my pain.

Above & Beyond has embraced a more holistic view of their music in regards to mental and physical well-being, They still do the big club records, pulsing with heavy sub-bass, but they have also opened up avenues for yoga and deep sets. This album represents the culmination of that awakening.

“With the Flow State project, we want to help bring people’s attention and focus towards helping themselves find better mental fitness and overall happiness in life,” explains Above & Beyond’s Paavo Siljamaki. “Through raised awareness, being more present, one can reach a state of flow: a creative and free state of mind where time, fear and stress dissipate.”

This is different from their Acoustic albums, which offer stripped down versions of previously released tracks. Flow State keeps the electronic elements alive, with soft strings, floating pads and fluttering piano that can dance across slow melodies. There are moments of silence sprinkled throughout the record to provide brief moments of compete introspection.
