Cassettes are making a comeback. They have seen double-digit growth in sales over the past few years, which makes you wonder who still has cassette players? Regardless of who are what is driving this, the overall market is still small. When you think of expensive pieces of music, vinyl is the first thing that comes to mind, with rare wax often sold for over $1,000. It may come as a surprise, but there have been quite a few cassettes sold for that price point. Discogs has revealed all of this in a list of the 100 most expensive cassettes ever sold (on their site).
The top seller is a promo cassette released by Warner for The Artist (Formerly Known As Prince) The Versace Experience – Prelude 2 Gold. It was a cassette of unreleased material given out to attendees of the Paris Fashion show for Versace in 1995.
Four in the top 10 are obscure compilations of songs, while Madonna’s complete collection rounds out the top 10 at $1,500. See the full list here.
