Martin Buttrich, Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann have released the album for their super group Better Lost Than Stupid aka BLTS. The trio have been releasing the odd single for the past two years, but now have collated those singles with some new music into their debut record Wild Slide.
It’s a bit of an odd album that at times tries to be like The Chemical Brothers and then oscillates into ravier versions of Moderat tracks. The top half of the album is where you will hear their singles put together and where the mishmash blend of influences starts to clash.
Once you get past that, the album starts to pick up a groove with the soothing “Right Now” and the soulful and funky “Harder Than Gold.”
It can be a bit hard to really pinpoint individual influences on each track, which can be a good thing to show their chemistry making music together.
These producers have been friends for over a decade and it shows, but it also can sound like three very busy men working on various projects throwing their ideas together and hoping it sticks. There isn’t as clear a line through the album as one might hope, but one can sense it is there somewhere in the background.
If you were disappointed or turned off by the first singles, listen to the full album and a more complete picture will emerge that you will likely enjoy. The album is a bit odd with their styles blending together in mysterious ways for synth-pop, house, techno and early rave music, but somehow it stays together for the most part.
