Robert Glasper has released his new mixtape / album Fuck Yo Feelings. It has one of the most impressive list of features on an album this year with Buddy, YEBBA, Mick Jenkins, Denzel Curry, Andra Day, Rapsody and the legend Herbie Hancock on there twice.
There is a flawless symbiotic relationship between Glasper and the litany of features on this album. They work within his jazz, soul and R&B framework and he provides the platform that works for each individual artist.
The album covers a lot of ground over 71 minutes. Some of the tracks offer commentary on the world like “Endangered Black Woman,” which speaks unapologetically about the perils that black women face in today’s society. “Why are everybody’s needs more urgent than my own, my feelings, my needs, my body, my safety.” It is that brash individualism that matches the mixtape title Fuck Yo Feelings.
It keeps you off balance with the very long intro where Affion Crockett announces everybody in the band and clowns them because fuck their feelings. There are a bunch of instrumental soulful jazz numbers that smoothen out some of the more up-tempo hip-hop numbers. But this isn’t a rap or jazz or soul album. It is a bit of everything all mixed up into one pretty cohesive project. Pick up a copy here.
