Over the past three years, Chicago based duo DRAMA has garnered attention for their ability to blend a diverse palette of musical influences and create a catchy sound. To round out their fall tour supporting rising star SG Lewis, DRAMA recently brought their electrifying live set to Downtown Los Angeles’ Novo Theatre on October 12. The newly signed Ghostly International act captivated the crowd with producer Na’el Shehade’s groovy, dance-pop, urban infused electronic beats and vocalist Via Rosa’s pitch-perfect smoky and soulful vocals. Performing their new single and first single release on Ghostly, “Hold On” along with 2019’s “Give No Fucks” and a selection of tunes off of their 2016 EP release Gallows, DRAMA wowed the audience with their retro-chic R&B vibe.
The duo's dynamism and creative, free-flowing musical expression allowed them to hold their own with headliner SG Lewis. While a majority of fans bought a ticket to see SG Lewis, there were a surprisingly high number of DRAMA fans present and many new fans gained that night. Via Rosa stole the show with her poetic, passionate, and inspirational lyricism. Coupled with Shehade’s hypnotic house meets R&B beats, the duo delivered one of the best sets I had the opportunity to experience in 2019. In the past, the duo has even been likened to one of the most revered indie bands of this last decade, The xx. With two big wins to close out 2019, signing to Ghostly International and scoring a support slot to SG Lewis, it seems that DRAMA is just warming up for 2020, which is sure to be their best year yet.
DRAMA perfectly set the tone for the headliner of the night SG Lewis. SG Lewis holds the keen ability to intertwine synth-heavy, atmospheric sounds with dance-pop bliss, lending him mainstream appeal. Best known for his super smooth R&B tinged vocals and catchy beats, SG Lewis delivered a powerful and moving live performance. His undeniably radiant energy and super smooth beats got the crowd dancing as he performed live renditions of fan favorites such as his renowned collaborations "Better" with Clairo and "Hurting" with AlunaGeorge along with select tracks off of his landmark debut EP Shivers. Performing to a completely packed house of superfans, SG Lewis' moody and evocative music hypnotized his audience into a daze. SG Lewis' soulful vocals and musicality seemed beyond his years. As we move into 2020, it'll be exciting to see what's around the corner next for this talented and prolific musician and vocalist.
