We recently covered MVSE’s set at Outside Lands last August, where he performed at the House by Heineken, and today we had the opportunity to chat with him and learn more about his background and his project.
Who is MVSE?
MVSE (pronounced mūse), whose real name is Martin Nguyen, is an electronic artist who strives to make songs that bridge together the digital and analog world. His sound is a combination of electronic synthesis, acoustic piano and guitars, and sound samples from the natural world.
As a life-long lover of music, he’s mastered several instruments, but his primary instruments of choice are guitar and piano. Although initially starting with Jazz Minor, MVSE went on to complete his education at the University of Southern California with degrees in both Business Administration, and Music ProductionWhat .
His debut EP, titled UNI VERSE, marked his entrance into the music scene, garnering millions of streams across platforms & garnered support from major touring artists around the world. Notable festivals he has played include Coachella, Outside Lands, Escape, in addition to sold out Headline shows across California these past few years. He is also supported by labels such as Wave Music, Lost in Dreams (an Insomniac Records Imprint), and Rude Service.
What are you thinking about when writing songs?
“The core essence of my songs are the emotions that they make you feel”. He hopes that his music evokes a range of emotion in his listeners, from sadness, to happiness, to anything in between. As an artist, MVSE strives to create music that takes his listener back to the past and to moments when they experienced similar emotions. He recently teamed up with Asian-Canadian artist Hoang to release a track entitled ‘Moments’ on Lost In Dreams, featuring emotional vocals from Rynn. This song perfectly captures the essence of nostalgia, living in the moments, and creating everlasting memories.
Tell us about your experience in the music industry
When asked about his passion in the industry, MVSE talks about being an avid supporter of other up and coming artists. He says that: “there just aren’t enough resources available to artists just starting out and looking to grow their platform. Oftentimes it seems like artists have to compete with one another in order to be successful. I challenge that conventional belief. I don’t believe it’s a zero sum game and we can all genuinely be successful together.”
What are some other contributing factors to your success?
MVSE’s interest in the business side of music also defines him as an artist. He strives to understand how the music industry works by making an effort to attend events and festivals even if he’s not playing. This allows him to network with others in the industry, from artists to managers to other creatives, and also draw inspiration from other artist performances. He is a big advocate for mutual success and celebrating when other creatives succeed, and one way that he does this is by supporting them at shows.
