Women have long been underrepresented in the dance music industry, but over the past few years, female producers have been making their mark and breaking barriers in the genre. With the rise of platforms like Soundcloud and YouTube, female producers have access to a wider audience and the opportunity to share their work with the world.
And as Skyler debuts her fresh rebrand (previously known as Skyler Madison), she’s already making monstrous waves in the industry. And to celebrate her fresh new moniker, new music, and a female-centric future in the music industry, we invited her to curate her list of the best female producers who are crushing the game in 2023.
Stream her latest single, out now on Monstercat, and then dive into her short list of her top female DJs along with a bit of background and context in Skyler’s own words on why she selected these female selectors.
This record can best be described as trusting the unknown, or better yet, just going with the flow and making the absolute best out of it; which I’m sure we can all heavily relate to in some form. As a human being, I feel like we can all try to strive for just enjoying the moment and not overthinking things as much as we do.” -SKYLER
Alison Wonderland

Alison Wonderland is an Australian singer, producer, and DJ, who has captivated audiences around the globe. She has really shattered ceilings for women in bass music and has genuinely helped revive the modern-day “trap” sound in such a fresh, innovative, and melodic approach.
Alison’s music resonates with me the most out of anyone else in the industry. Her style consists heavily of trap and future bass, which is similar to my own project. Her storytelling is incredibly vulnerable, layered, and true, allowing her to build a loyal following. Her brand gets bigger and more creative every year which shows her hustle and drive. Her show and stage presence are one of the most diverse because she blends live instrumentals with vocals and DJ’ing. As one of the biggest producers in EDM, it’s respectable she genuinely cares about putting on smaller/up-and-coming artists by giving them a platform on her radio show as well as her new music label.
Rezz

Rezz is a Canadian LGBT artist pushing boundaries with her dark and hypnotic mid-tempo sounds; as well as her other-worldly live performances.
She is one of the first female electronic artists to truly go the extra mile with such an incredible and immersive audiovisual experience that is completely unique to her and her brand. You can stream her music and feel immersed in a unique soundscape, but then she is able to take that experience to a completely new level through her live shows. She makes every performance memorable and I really look up to her as one of the best in the game for that reason. On top of her creativity, she was able to pioneer mid-tempo into a more mainstream sound and I give her mad credit for being able to build up and capitalize on such a unique genre of bass music.
WHIPPED CREAM

WHIPPED CREAM hails from Canada and is one of the most multi-faceted female producers in modern-day electronic music. She’s proven to be a disruptive genre-bender in all the best possible ways. Listening to WHIPPED CREAM is like opening up Pandora’s Box of sounds—you can expect anything from an array of Drum N Bass, Pop, Hip Hop, Future Bass or something completely experimental, yet, still ground groundbreaking and forward thinking.
I’ve watched Whipped Cream since the start of her career and it feels like she is ever-changing both as a person and an artist, which I absolutely love. I hate being put inside of societal boxes and she is very open about bending rules, trying new things, and creating your own wave regardless of what others think. Not only that, but I met her after one of my first shows in 2020 and she went out of her way to give me some of the best advice I have received as a female in the industry and that is the same energy I want to give to others.
Charlotte de Witte

Charlotte by far owns the techno scene, especially in Europe. In my opinion, she is the queen of the underground. She has pushed boundaries for females across the globe in a scene that was dominated by males since the beginning. She was the first female artist to ever close out Tomorrowland’s mainstage and I know she isn’t slowing down any time soon. Charlotte de Witte’s acid + dark techno beats are nothing but fun and infectious.
She is one of my favorite artists outside of my own genre (bass music) and listening to her, I am inspired by the underground influences she pulls from. Whenever I watch her festival sets, especially her Tomorrowland set, she is able to completely own the crowd. You can tell she has such a deep love for music and she isn’t in the scene for any other reason except to share that love with the world. The best way I can describe her brand is effortless and it creates such an authentic feeling in her music and performances.
Grimes

Not many know that Grimes is a record producer, singer, and songwriter. Her musical approach combines rock, pop, and electronic music creating ‘experimental pop.’
Grimes has such an incredibly complex mind and vision that she is able to create an experimental sound unlike anyone else. If I could have dinner with 3 people in the world she would definitely be one of them. Her style of production is also very versatile and respectable for being able to blend so many genres together to create her own unique and staple sound. I am also a big fan of her vocals and whenever I pick vocalists for my own tracks, I look for someone who can give me that same euphoric feeling that Grimes’ voice is able to spark in me.
