The shortest month of the year didn’t lack options for epic albums to sift through. Plenty of leftfield electronica, shoegaze, and alt-pop soundtracked our month. 

Here at Magnetic, we’ve been listening closely to everything that’s been released, and we’ve narrowed down our favorite six albums of the month. Slowthai – Ugly

UGLY, the latest album from slowthai, is a departure from his previous works. The album explores self-reflection and artistic freedom, with a punk element that vibrates through every element of its creation. The album features guest appearances from Ethan P Flynn, Shygirl, and Fontaines D.C., and is produced by Dan Carey alongside Kwes Darko.

Kelela – Raven

Kelela’s sophomore album, Raven, showcases her evolution as an artist with a pared-down and mature sound, although sometimes lacking the tension and charm of her debut. While some tracks like “Let It Go” and “Closure” stand out with their sultry and intense vibes.

Young Fathers

Young Fathers return after a five-year hiatus with Heavy Heavy, an album that packs a dense punch. The trio’s unique sound is still present, with glitchy indietronica, grimy drum ‘n’ bass, and sounds from across the African diaspora all piled together. The result is a collection of dense, triumphant pop songs that will make you want to get on up and turn it loose.

SOFY – Bored in colour

SOFY’s EP ‘Bored in Colour (Pt. 2)’ perfectly blends indie/pop gems. With glistening vocals floating effortlessly across the top of the mix, the EP offers a calming and majestic pathway. The crunchy drums and swooning guitars provide an exquisite amount of uplifting energy across the soundscape.

Daine – shapeless

daine’s ‘Shapeless’ mixtape is a true embodiment of her multifaceted sound. Balancing organic and electronic instrumentation, each track on this eight-track release packs a punch with its depth of production. daine’s emotionally-fueled vocals cut through the multi-genre soundscape with ease.

Sunnbrella – Heartworn

London-based artist David Zbirka, aka Sunnbrella, has released his first full-length album ‘Heartworn’, co-produced by Patrick James Fitzroy. The album is a lockdown project several years in the making, showcasing Zbirka’s love for shoegaze and contemporary nu-gaze acts. ‘Heartworn’ is an enticing combination of euphoric distortion, windswept vocal harmonies, and determined dance rhythms, offering a fresh take on the genre.
