Nettwerk Music Group proudly welcomes the latest member of their musical family, the ethereal producer, pastels. Residing in Melbourne, pastels, whose real name is Annie Bui, picked their stage name to reflect their music’s delicate yet perpetually evolving nature. With a background in piano and violin, pastels has defined a unique niche for themselves in the instrumental music world, presenting stories through their songs.
pastels’ debut project under Nettwerk, entitled Love Garden, arrived earlier this month. The album rollout kicked off with lead single “Dreamfield” released in January. The track is a slow-burning blend of shimmering synths, gentle bongo taps, and a medley of soulful piano chords and saxophone blurps that echo FKJ. As the song comes to a close, the organic sound of crickets chirping is weaved into the composition, enhancing its immersive quality.
Pastels’ past releases often incorporate distinct thematic settings. A case in point is their 2020 double EP collaboration with Bay Area producer Mr. Hong, which captures the essence of a coffee shop—cafe a.m. and cafe p.m. Love Garden extends this creative approach.
Love Garden is now accessible on all digital platforms and can be found here. Since their inaugural release, the Thoughts on Keys EP in 2018, pastels has consistently offered new and inventive music. She has gone beyond the digital realm with live performances and other collaborative efforts, like their reinterpretation of “Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book for a Disney-endorsed compilation album. The music community eagerly awaits more from this innovative artist.
