With years of industry experience and GRAMMY nominations under their belt, Grey—the dynamic brother duo of Kyle and Michael Trewartha—are not your everyday pop act. Recognized for their work alongside global names like Zedd, Camila Cabello, and Hailee Steinfeld, they’ve consistently crafted music that transcends borders. Having started their journey by cold emailing Skrillex, their remix skills caught the attention of many in the industry, leading to collaborations that garnered top spots on US Top 40 charts and numerous awards.
Now, the duo is all set to release their next and most forward-thinking work to date, Contra EP, signaling a new chapter in their already impressive career. This 5-track collection will offer a lush blend of bass and house elements, paired with the meticulous electronic production Grey is known for. The EP’s feature track, “RAVEN,” in collaboration with dubstep maestro Virtual Riot, epitomizes Grey’s artistry—a masterful mix of vocal melodies, ferocious sound design, and emotion-rich lyrics that proceeds the full EP’s release. It’s an opulent showcase that promises not only to elevate Grey from the shadows of their celebrated peers but to solidify their status as luminaries in their own right.

Congratulations on your burgeoning success. How does it feel to be recognized as a GRAMMY-nominated brother duo?
It’s still super weird. It feels like not too long ago we were in our bedroom working on remixes with a laptop sitting on an ice pack so it wouldn’t overheat. We were stressing about trying to get the “grey” SoundCloud URL and doing whatever we could to get people to listen to our music while still working at a ramen shop.
How was the experience of working with Zedd and Hailee Steinfeld on the RIAA Quadruple Platinum Record “Starving”?

It was really surreal, honestly. It just all happened so fast, and we couldn’t be more grateful for how lucky we got. I mean it was our first original song as grey. Zedd really mentored us through that whole process and did everything he could for us. Hailee was a sweetheart and was fun to work with as well.
Can you share the creative process behind your new track “RAVEN” with Virtual Riot?
The other day we were going through old renders and heard the first version of
“RAVEN” and we realized we wrote the top line over an AWAY song and totally forgot about that.
We just got inspired by One Piece and always wanted to write a song about some pirate king conquest so we kinda just went down the rabbit hole on epic lyrics with our friend Sayak Das. Once we had the top line written we wrote some new chords and produced out a first version and when we showed it to Virtual Riot one night at a party he was instantly down to work on it with us!
Your tracks have resonated with a global audience. What, in your opinion, makes a song universally appealing?
Good writing, Organic elements, Innovative sound design, Nostalgia, Simplify simplify simplify. Although we tend to suck at simplifying things haha
How do you handle the pressure and expectations that come with being globally recognized artists?
Honestly, we don’t feel that pressure at the moment but maybe that will change. I feel like we just deliver when we need to deliver. We rarely feel stuck anymore. It’s a lot easier to just openly create when you aren’t on a major label telling you what you “should” make. Looking back, what advice would you give to emerging artists hoping to make a mark in the industry?
Looking back, what advice would you give to emerging artists hoping to make a mark in the industry?

Just get really good at the thing you love most and try to do it differently from everyone else. I know it’s tempting just to do the same thing everyone does when it’s working for all of them but then there’s nothing to set you apart. After that just keep trying cause you have to get lucky. Everyone who’s ever made it either got really lucky one day and had the talent to back it up or just had a lot of money.
