In a year saturated by big room techno, high quality of the variety is still out there and fairly represented in May's best-of chart along with deeper tunes that reached just as far but in a different direction. Most notably, the remix package to Luke Slater's timeless production from way back in '97. An eight-track makeover package to "LOVE" which saw outstanding revisions from the likes of LUCY, Marcel Dettmann, Scuba, and even a Planetary Assault Systems version from the man himself. Although, it's the lead remix from Burial which made the hair on my neck stand up. Check it out here for yourself here as the best tune to drop in May.
1. "LOVE (BURIAL REMIX)" - LUKE SLATER [MOTE EVOLVER]
If Luke Slater's recently released remix package for "Love" could be considered a full-length LP then it might just be the best album of the year thus far.
2. "MELODI" - ROD [AFTERLIFE]
Benny Rodrigues' debut on Afterlife under his alter ego, ROD is top-notch, moody electronica. Most notably, this gorgeous ear-worm the brand new Afterlife life artist has appropriately titled, "Melodi."
3. "DELTA SYSTEM (DYSART REMIX)" - DENSE & PIKA [KNEADED PAINS]
DYSART along with techno heavyweights, Andres Campo, Ramon Tapia, and Matt Sassari have all been enlisted to remix the 2015 Summer slammer, "Delta System." A lo-fi banger from the earlier days of Kneaded Pains which Matt Tanner gets downright filthy with. His floor-dominating revision kicks it up a notch with gritty synth fills and a big, giant bottom-end characterized by a rubbery bounce which the producer has been accustomed to incorporating in his biggest tunes to date.
4. "STELLA (KOLSCH REMIX LONG)" - JAM & SPOON [IPSO]
Widely regarded as one of electronic music's finest production, "Stella" by Jam & Spoon gets an outstanding update from none other than Kölsch.
5. "UNVEIL" - VICTOR RUIZ [DRUMCODE]
"Nimbus" may be the lead, title-track but if you ask me, the real magic lies with this floor-pounder which features a gorgeous arpeggio that will have your mind twirling to a far off land.
6. "SACRED CYCLES (ADAM BEYER/BART SKILS/LAYTON GIORDANI RENAISSANCE REMIX)" - PETE LAZONBY [RENAISSANCE]
I would almost rather not anyone touch this mega classic from way back in '94 but upon hearing this all-star update my mind has been instantly changed. Drumcode regulars, Layton Giordani and Bart Skils along with the big boss took this trance classic and updated it with a driving kick-drum and some sinister synth fills making it quite suitable for today's floors.
7. "WE ARE" - MARK REEVE [SUBVISION]
Mark Reeve's latest outing is phenomenal. The title track is a big peak-time banger and the b-side, "We Are" is just as big with it's ridiculously good rhythm.
8. "UNLIMITED" - COSMIC BOYS & THE YELLOWHEADS [LEGEND]
Imagine a stage in the heavens among the clouds high in the sky and techno is playing. I would imagine it sounding something like this.
9. "ATISH" - IGNACIO ARFELI & I AM BAM [SUARA]
Both making their debut on the techno chart, Berlin's I Am Bam along with Argentinian producer, Ignacio Arfeli crafted this very wicked acid techno reminiscent of something pulled straight from its heyday in the mid '90s.
10. "BRIGHTEN UP BUNNY" - ROD [AFTERLIFE]
More chart action from Benny Rodrigues on his Afterlife debut except this time with the more upfront title tune, Brighten Up Bunny."
11. "EXUBERANT GAMBIT" - COSMIN TRG [SPORTIV]
With his fifth release on SPORTIV, Cosmin TRG dives deep into the art of techno with three varied tunes all brilliant in their own right especially this drum and bass hybrid titled "Exuberant Gambit."
12. "TAKE YOU BACK" - ONNO [KNEADED PAINS]
Respected Dutch producer, ONNO debuts on Kneaded Pains with a pair of floor destroyers including this all-out assault titled, "Take You Back."
13. "RETURN TO OZ (ARTBAT REMIX)" - MONOLINK [EMBASSY ONE]
With absolutely epic remixes like this, it won't be much longer 'til ARTBAT isn't techno's best kept secret anymore.
14. "ALCHEMY (I_O REMIX)" - ABOVE & BEYOND FEAT. ZOE JOHNSTON [ANJUNABEATS]
It was only a matter of time until trance and techno came full circle and here the two genres are in the form of a blistering update on Above & Beyond's beloved 2012 hit, "Alchemy."
15. "VIOLET" - MONIKA KRUSE & TIMMO [TERMINAL M]
Played out by many artists at Timewarp early last month, this next level collaboration between Timmo and Terminal M label boss, Monika Kruse is still getting heavy support on the charts and in the clubs.
