It's time to pop turtlenecks over Hawaiian button downs and get in cozy mode. Welcome to the season of change and watching Hocus Pocus on repeat (shout out to my first crush Allison). The summer sun is setting, the brisk air is blowing in, holiday fun is around the corner and a new decade on the horizon.
We've enjoyed beautiful views, glassy green waves, lavender and peach sunsets and many tasty margs and crispy bois all summer long. In honor of the last hurrah comes September's Chill Dance chart with some fresh squeezed, sun drunk tunes to reminisce on those carefree barefoot days and get excited for what's to come.
I'm really loving some of the change and evolution I'm seeing in some favorite Magnetic artists. Tensnake joining forces to create 80's electro-new wave group Gemini Rising, the duo of Lil Silva and George Fitzgerald's launching their new project OTHERLiiNE, Lane 8 announcing his third album with brand new single to boot, and the reemergences of groups like PNAU, Klangkarussell and Polo & Pan after awaited hiatuses.
Check out my reviews of these stellla tracks below and the full Spotify playlist:
1. Lost Frequencies - "Sun Is Shining (Deluxe Mix)" - Found Frequencies/Armada Music B.V.
I just got back from my bachelor party and we stayed in an Airbnb that was a converted church so the gospel vibes of this lead track off LF's new album are hitting the spot. The sun is shining ladies and gents and we are always finding a reason to be feeling fine. Time to pull on a turtleneck, pour a couple fingers of whiskey, throw on a spooky film and enjoy our new brisk season. I haven't had a chance to dive into Lost Frequencies brand new album (out last week), but from the track list I am taken aback by the level of talent featured - James Blunt and Aloe Blacc?!
2. Lane 8 feat. POLIÇA - "Brightest Lights" - This Never Happened
Is there a more JOYOUS way to end summer 2019 than to hear that Lane 8 is releasing a new LP in January 2020? The answer is yes, because he just released a brand new extraordinary trailblazer gem from said new album featuring my favorite Lane 8 collaborator POLIÇA. I'll just leave you with this song's gorgeous important chorus:
All the world’s just noise
We will drown it out
When you’re holding me
Love will scream out loud
3. Cassian feat. Zolly - "Magical" - Rose Ave Records
Something magical is cooking up from the young stunner Cassian and Crooked Colours' Philip Slabber aka ZOLLY. Cassian's latest "Magical" is one of a few first releases on RÜFÜS DU SOL's label Rose Ave Records and it certainly melds with that signature Aus sound. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Australia is making some damn exciting and amazing music.
4. Joris Voorn feat. HAELOS - "Messiah" - Spectrum Music
Joris Voorn recently announced a new album \\\\ (Four) and kicked things into high gear with this old-school rave-inspired track "Messiah" with sous chef electro-quartet HAELOS adding that gorgeous glean. After a cosmic soundscape intro, the song turns full Matrix soundtrack breakbeat once HAELOS singer Lotti Benardout starts to belt it out. I have always been hit or miss with Joris but I am so excited for this album. Especially after hearing that Underworld would also be featured....(licks lips).
5. Klangkarussell - "Comoros" - Bias Beach Records
The Austrian duo are back after a two year hibernation in the beat cave. We are treated with a fresh dreamy sound to their production that deviates from some of their more summer-ready mega singles. While the single remains authentically Klangkarussell, a more matured production palette is a welcome change. Keep exploring gents.
6. Flamingosis & Pure Colors - "Bootsy's New Bass"
I had the pleasure of seeing Flamingosis a couple weekends ago at Red Rocks where he opened for Big Gigantic at their annual Rowdytown event and it was a wild and visually stunning grand time. He has absolutely nailed a signature sound and compliments it with Miami Vice influenced visuals that assures nothing but good vibes during his live set. Catch him wherever you can! This collab single off of Atlanta producer Pure Color's new album is a glowing homage to P-Funk's Bootsy Collins and features the legend's excellent bass work. Funky fun time for the ear drums.
7. PNAU feat. Ollie Gabriel - "All Of Us" - etcetc Music Pty Ltd
These three Australian dudes have been doing this for twenty damn years. Nick Littlemore (half of Empire of the Sun), Peter Mayes and Sam Littlemore have evolved with the times and still are able to capture something that is both fresh and youthful but authentically PNAU in their sound. "If a shark stops swimming it dies. And I can't stay alive if I can't dance tonight" captures the essence of these legends' career - they keep moving, growing, and grooving. PNAU is playing chess not checkers in the music industry and they are always winning. Check out their mix for Magnetic HERE.
8. Polo & Pan - "Gengis - Edit" - Universal Music
I don't think I've experienced a more liberating and cool vibe of a show than Polo & Pan in the last few years. It is wild and primal and pure. These guys have something anciently tribal and fantastically youthful about their melodic Parisian sound and that electric environment created at their shows. Picking up right where they left off from last years incredible Caravelle album, P&P are back with a tribal bouncing production complete with Didgeridoo solo that is sure to transport you to the distant world of WHOA.
9. Kev Twine - "Summer Daze"
Sometimes in my Steve Zissou inspired expeditions into the deep seas of house music I come upon a new species of glowing chill house artist and have to share it with the world. This one won't eat you like a Jaguar Shark, it's more like an electric jellyfish floating with the ability to give you a little shock every now and then. Grab your red cap and happy exploring...
10. Eelke Kleijn feat. Ost - "Lost Souls (Nora En Pure Remix)" - DAYS like NIGHTS
Did you know that Eelke Kleijn is a film composer (Ron Howard's Rush among others) and one of the most wide ranging and talented producers in the global game? I would love to learn how Nora En Pure and him got linked up and what the process was behind creating this ivory key colored house deep dive. It is a special collab and I hope they make more music soon because this end result is flawless and so natural.
11. Les Loups feat. Brock - "Jaded" - Paradiso
It's been a three year hiatus but the German nu-disco trio has thawed off from deep freeze and is ready to set fire to dance floors across the globe. I love featured Brock's moment two thirds through the song showing off his pipes and range.
12. Satin Jackets - "Mirage (Anoraak Remix)" - Eskimo Recordings
Synth-pop nu-disco vibes are without a doubt one of my favorite genres. You throw on a mix of Miami Horror, Classixx, Satin Jackets, Van She, Cut Copy and Anoraak on and there is no way you're leaving the spot you stand without having a great time. Luckily for us, two of the artists on that list collaborated for a remix and we are some lucky disco ducks to be quacking and grooving to this delicious cracker.
13. Gemini Rising [Tensnake & Fiora] - "Orbit"
Oh you thought I was done with the new incredible collaboration projects? NOPE. Next up on Oh My God This Is Amazing News we have Tensnake and Fiora's infectious 80's new wave synth-pop wonderland Gemini Rising. The simplest way I can describe it is CHVRCHES meets Stranger Things. Ya, it's freaking rad as can get. The queen bee Fiora takes control of your world upon hearing her voice and Grammy-winning producer Lester Mendez, and producer Marco Niemersk aka Tensnake create the glowing synthscape world. Their debut album Best Case Life just cracked in early September and if you want your life to be happy I recommend listening.
14. OTHERLiiNE [George Fitzgerald & Lil Silva] - "Chimes"
I first heard the sweet sounds that George Fitzgerald and Lil Silva made off of the legendary single "Roll Back" from Fitzgerald's album All That Must Be and that synergy hasn't left my mind. As if my music angels opening up House Heaven's pearly gates, the pair have decided to start a new collaboration now known as OTHERLiiNE. This debut of the new project leaves my mouth watering for more. Please make it happen soon gents.
15. Zimmer - "Physique" - Roche Musique
The new wave of French producers are the most solid in their outfit and quality of production. Zimmer has always been a leader among them and on the Roche Musique label especially. His debut self titled album is a dreamscape journey with touches of techno, disco, ambient and house and this lead track will truly kick the adventure into gear. Buckle up for the ride.
